Gorgeous photographs, nice plants.
I am hella new to “real” hydro, but I am using both airstones and drippy little waterfalls. I agree, DO saturation should not be very hard to reach with some thought put into the design up front. As with most things in this game, there is a lot of dogma out there, and not a lot of data.

Airstones and decent pumps keep my expensive fish-friends alive just fine, would trust them with my plants any day.

1 watt per gallon gets you all the DO you can need with airstones,If noise is an issue hang them up and they quiet down.I personally dont get bothered by the noise.
Back to waterfalls im curious how a waterfall would work in these buckets with no surface area.
These are 4 gallon square buckets,I use to use 8 gallon but saw no difference in growth other than more water for the chillers to keep cool.

Interesting thoughts, there sure isn’t much room in those tubs! My waterfalls are little drippers halfway down in the hydroton basket, so they drip down the clay pellets until they get to the roots or drip off the bottom of the basket. You have vastly more experience with hydroponics than I do, but I think surface area exposure to gaseous o2 and the breaking of surface tension both oxygenate water pretty effectively, I am nof certain of any of it, but that’s my understanding.

1w per gallon is a nice rule of thumb, I like it. Many freshwater fish folks do about half that, but there are often other sources of o2 there, as well.

Depends on how much light and co2 your giving the plants.you can grow one in a mud puddle with 100 watts of t5 or give it some serious light and 1000 ppm of co2 and feed that bitch

That makes sense, thanks for the insight. I really want to drive some hydro crops pretty hard some day, playing with some rdwc as a little clone factory for now. I need to move to a new place before I can expand, but then it’s going to be game time.

yeah man dont get caught up in the hype,Airstones work,There simple and effective.Plus you cant chill your water with a 2000GPH pump,You have to have weaker pump separate to run the water to the chiller or it will stay on 24/7

I do!
I have around 120 gallons for my 12 res system, but theres room in my boxes for 2 plants each if i want to. Everything is split in 2 really. I could run only half of it if I want to.
Water pumps are cheaper than air pumps, I have both and plan on getting a couple bigger water pumps to do some waterfalls and 2 of them is still cheaper than 1 of my big air pumps. Right now I have 2 stones in each box that each get the recommended 160GPH of air. Maybe Ill run one side on air and one side on waterfalls to try both out.
The common complaints of air seems to be that the pumps are louder and usually less energy efficient unless you get expensive ones, so theres cost too, and that stones take extra work to boil clean or replace when they clog.

waterfalls require more pipe, more bulkheads and fittings, and more shit that can clog.Uniseals suck and leak and plastic is silicone resistant.bulkheads are truly the best way.Im sure waterfalls work great i just personally dont find the need to change or fix something that isnt broke,
120 gallons is ALOT of water for 12 site.If i was doing an 8 week veg than maybe but for fast veg plants i dont feel the need to maintain that much water.

not trying to say your way is broke at all or trying to tell you youre wrong or should change =)
just giving my input. I like messing with stuff and trying new things out, building and tinkering with the system is half the fun for me, thats why I went hydro! I love piecing together bits of pvc and tubing and figuring out how to make it do what i want while having it look how I want too.

My boxes were all fairly high when I pumped that out, so it may actually be under 100 once everything is where it should be. I have 17 gal totes a little under half full, if I find that 1 plant isnt filling it enough ill double down.

Your plants are beautiful btw!

Any reason why theres air hoses on the ground lol?and what's your point.i got 2 week old plants that shit plants out that look like that
Because the above section has air lines feeding my totes. I'm not gonna lie about this kinda stuff, man.
The setup underneath was older using only 1gal buckets and has since been replaced with what I posted earlier.F7F1B8B0-61C1-4958-ABD8-D328ED555608.jpeg C9C6BBD5-9E92-4441-A4AE-AF1FC33B0D7D.jpeg

Do you have a parts list or Guide bud? One of the best system DIY RDWC I’ve seen on here so far, very clean. I see you said bulkheads but any other specifics?
