I would run 12 cobs over a 4x4,You can run less and increase the driver amperage but you wont get the efficiency of running more cobs at less wattage for a larger more even footprint.
12 Vero29 D series 3000K cobs,12 Pin Heatsinks and 12 Lidel vero29 lens holders.These will hold the cobs to the heatsinks and also they kind of work like a mini reflector.The cobs emit light at 120 degrees so with 12 cobs you will have lots of nice overlap.
2 Meanwell 320H 1400B drivers,You will wire 6 cobs to each driver,
Get 12 of the molex connectors for the veros,All you do is wire red to black red to black.you will end up with 1 red and 1 black on each end of 6 cobs you wired together.just connect the red wire to the driver and the black wire to the driver where it says output.
I would run 3 rows of 4 cobs over the 4x4.Use aluminum angle and cut it at 38 inches.Place the heatsinks on the rail and space them out so they are even.I always run my first outside cobs about 6 inches in from the outside of the footprint and than put the others in the middle evenly.thats why i say cut the rails at 38 inches and put the first 2 heatsinks on the outsides.

I get everything i need from rapid led.They ship fast and never no bullshit.

Each cob is 38 volts and amps on the driver is 1400,1.4 amps so 38 x 1.4 is 53 watts x 12 cobs is 638 watts divided by 16 square feet giving you 39 watts of cob per square foot which is perfect.

He could get the 1700mA drivers and it would give more wattage per cobb but he would need more drivers.
38v x 1.7 =64 watts per cobb.could use the 240H 1700mA drivers and use 3 of them.4 cobbs on each driver.giving 768 watts total.

You can run less cobs and higher wattages using different components to save money.thats just the way I did it based off months of research to get as efficient as possible.
Buy them once and forget about it.that setup will last 10 years without a bulb change.

Seems like a pretty good design to me, thanks for posting it. Is it a lot different than the 4x4 kit they sell? The prices are really close, and the specs are too. For $10 more you have one less driver to deal with, and about 5% more watts than the kit, do you know any other differences offhand? Seems like a pretty good tradeoff to me.

I have designed a couple fixtures and never built them, over the last coulke years, I ended up going a pretty similar direction with those designs as you have. Rapid LED is solid, a lot of aquarium guys use them too, and they have been around for a while.

Seems like a pretty good design to me, is it a lot different than the 4x4 kit they sell? The prices are really close, and the specs are too. For $10 more you have one less driver to deal with, and about 5% more watts than the kit, do you know any other differences offhand?

The 4x4 kit uses less cobs I believe and higher wattages.ill have to go back and look.for the amount of cobs on my build it's cheaper than buying the kits

My guess is they are using lower bin codes, B or C, probably, as they don’t list which ones they use for the kit.

Maybe it has changed, or I got it wrong, but I priced out your build at $760, no big deal, I am just curious. It will be time for me to build some lights soon. I like it, good price, great coverage and efficiency.

There kit is basically the same they just use 3 185 drivers instead of 2 of the 320s.it can be done either way cause the amps are still the same.
The frames are extra if you want to use there frames.i think they changed it for the 4x4 because it use to use citizen cobs and 9 cobs for the 4x4.
I would definitely get that kit you posted for the 4x4

I hit a P deficiency by not adding the extra after 5 weeks.last time I ran the calmag to high and locked out the K.ill have them dialed in perfect on the next run.
