hey i have a question what kind of fan did u use
Mate 9 years on and this post is still great. Thanks for all this will be sure putting into practice for grow box in the futureSo my girls have been giving off their sweet sensual perfume for days now, and I know I should have done this sooner... but here is my DIY carbon filter..
Picked up a few things at walmart.
Black duck-tape
Black "Pencil cup"
Smaller black "Pencil cup"
Black ladies socks (pantyhose)
Activated carbon
Poor some carbon in the mesh like "pencil cup"
.... just enough so the smaller cup is level with the larger cup.
Slip the smaller cup into the sock
Tuck the sock into the smaller cup holding the end of the sock. Pore in the carbon.. keep holding the end of the sock.
Now pull on the end of the sock and use your finger to guide the carbon into the space between both cups until filled.
Now pull the end of the sock over the entire filter.. twist the end of the sock at the bottom and pull it up over the end of the cup.
Now simply use duck-tape to place the filter over your exhaust fan. I used a rubber band to secure it...
Works great... though I already miss that sweet aroma =[
Don't forget to visit the rest of my micro grow for more great Zen style DUI.. link in my sig...

You're better of just buying a 4" carbon filter. This is a ten year old thread. Prices have come down significantly. That filter is too small to do any good. I made a big one at about the time this thread was posted and it was a mess plus you really need to get that carbon packed tight and without a shaker table you're not going to get that done.how long will this last blowing through a 4 inch inline fan running 170 cfm?
I totally dont agree. For a microgrow setup, this pencil cup version is way more practical than a store bought 4 inch filter. 4 inch filters seem to be about 14 inches long and 7 inches in diameter....the flange is 4 inches but the body much wider. It's hard to fit something that big into any kind of a small cabinet. Thanks a ton to the original poster! How cool that this 10 yr old post still has life! You're better of just buying a 4" carbon filter. This is a ten year old thread. Prices have come down significantly. Save yourself the mess and time and just buy one. It won't cost much more than making a DIY carbon filter that doesn't work very well and allows smell to get through.
