What PH meter do you recommend?

I'm tired of going through cheap pens like clockwork and am seeking something more reliable with a replaceable probe. I just ordered the 2 following meters off of amazon and am awaiting a Christmas Eve delivery.

Blue Lab PH Meter
Milwaukee MW602

Both meters have replaceable probes. The MW 102 has a 2 year warranty on the unit and Blue Lab has a 5 year warranty on the unit. Both companies warranty the probe for 6 months. The Blue Lab only has a PH resolution of .1 whereas the MW102 has a resolution of .01 which is more preferable in my opinion, because with a .01 resolution you can tell when the meter reading is beginning to drift. With a .1 resolution the unit will always be rounding up or down which is still plenty functional, but it is a downgrade in my opinion. Maybe I'm just nitpicking, but this is a pricey purchase and nitpick I will do.

Blue Lab meters seem to only be popular within the growing community and nowhere else and my personal feeling is that they are overpriced for the technology they actually bring to the table after looking at the specs compared to PH meters in the same price range from competitors. Also, compare Blue Lab's price on their website of $299.99 for the combo meter versus $177.00 on Amazon and ebay (or any local grow shop for that matter). That's not confidence inspiring to me. That doesn't make the meter junk, but that definitely doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy inside about Blue Lab as a company and how they market their product. Anyhow, I digress.

Every grower I've asked that I know has suggested Blue Lab which is why I reluctantly ordered it. The Milwaukee MW102 is apparently big in the home brewing community and I personally like the specs better than Blue Lab's. I tried a $100.00 Hanna meter recently with a .01 resolution and immediately after calibration I watched the reading drift +.06 as the probe was still sitting in the 4.0 cal solution. Promptly returned and unimpressed with Hannah aside from their great customer service.

What do you guys use? I've even tossed around the idea of narrow range PH strips, but it just seems like it would be tedious and cumbersome in the end.

I use a bluelab guardian and love it so far. Super glad I got it. I just leave it on and in the water 24/7 so i can just walk down and look.
Ive calibrated it once a month in the 5 months ive had it and it hasnt drifted at all, been dead on in the solution every time.

Eventually I want a gaurdian, but for now it would be overkill (and over the budget) for my present needs. That is one sexy piece of equipment though. I love the fly by vitals.

I have a 2 bluelab combos and it is nice to walk out and press a button, but the ppm meters on them suck. They read off from each other by 10-20 ppm. No way to calibrate.
Even if they sucked worse I would still keep them, if for nothing else ease of use.

I snagged mine semi local for $100. He said he used it for 1 grow before he quit because it was taking up too much of his free time, but it looked brand new and he had all of the original packaging and everything.

I use to be strictly bluelab until i needed one in a hurry a couple months ago and my reg grow shop was closed, ended up going to another shop and all they had in stock where your basic shit units and apera. bought the apera ph60 and kicking myself for not trying this brand sooner, never see me with bluelab again.

I'm glad to hear you mention the MW101. I have heard good things about the MW meters and it makes me feel better about having bought the MW102.
the MW rep that i spoke with told me to rinse with white vinegar and store the probe in either RO or distilled. like i said, my probe is still good after 6 years and only needs calibration a few times per grow.

Most meters typically require storing the probe in a 4 M KCI solution. Storing a probe in RO or distilled water is never recommended as prolonged submersion in water can encourage diffusion out of the electrode, which will affect its sensitivity. I think it's great that you got 6 years out of a single meter though, especially with improper storage. It might not be a bad idea for you to buy a lottery ticket too. It seems luck is on your side.

that was per MW technical support. i'll take his advice over anybody else.
Hi, recently purchased both a MW101 and MW 102 PH meter and I have a lot of leftover KCI 4 M from another brand of meter that I no longer use. Are Milwaukee meters compatible with KCI 4 M storage solution? If not, what type of solution does Milwaukee Instruments recommend for the MW101 and MW 102?

Also, a friend I spoke to claims that Milwaukee tech support advised him that storing his probe in distilled water is recommended. I think he is mistaken and would like your opinion on that. I have always been under the impression that diffusion will occur if the electrode is stored in anything but KCI solution or PH 4.

Thanks for your help

I'll post their response as soon as I receive it.
