well I was thinking more like 100 plant pheno hunts from resulting seeds I make from the cultivars I come across either given or bought. I was gonna employ something I heard kevin Jodrey, or someone I have allot of respect for knowledge wise, said. they basically do 100 plant pheno hunts via 4 separate x 25 plant runs over the year. yes it is forever time wise in comparison, but I don't know other growers near me to share the space ya know what I mean. or else I would coordinate on projects with them to do 100-200 plant runs at once. you gave me allot to think about. your way is definitely more efficient and targeted t a specific goal. my goal is in this order. preserve the original cultivar I was given or bought by making allot of seeds up front. then I can always pull something similar back out from it and not worry about losing it thus no need for massive cloning or keepind allot of mothers. 2nd goal. to pheno hunt along the way for something special for me personally, stuff I enjoy, and 3 play around with interesting hybrid ideas should I have any, but this is a if I have time, space or something think worth taking away from my other two goals above. maybe that gives you more info about what I am trying to accomplish. oh and clearly I want to preserve things by passing around seeds from the cultivars I mentioned or if someone like a selection I mde for my headstash they can have a cut. I have no money goals whatsoever, I just liked the name outliergenetix lol because I always considered myself an outlier and the best plants are often outliers so I was like lets go with that. nobody likes the same 'ol thing right
Large scale pheno hunts have, in the past, and today. Rewarded some breeders with "the Pheno" at ratio's of 200:1
Riot's "Clockwork Orange"is the example that comes to mind first.
In running pheno hunts from F1 pairings. Popping the first 24 beans yielded 16 females and 8 males. Of these 16 females. There were 12 distinct pheno's and 4 defined as being the same as some others.... Keeping in mind that the term "genetic shift" only applies to crossing different strains with one another. You can see that all those influences to the parents genetic background are finding places to express themselves.....The more diversity that goes in, the more that can come out.....
Having friends help with pheno hunting runs can help.... GREATLY but, I understand the lack of those that can help thing too.
I had a real bitch'in Strawberry Cough X Sativa Hemp strain of a medical, high CBD project. She was testing out at about 9% CBD and 10% THC...... It was offered to several dispensaries for what it was, a medical strain.
They hesitated on the price but, went ahead and tried a few zips to test the market. It took about 4 days and I was getting calls like, "I'll take everything you can get me, at your price. We can't keep it on the shelves!"
Production was increased. It was going great guns in my disp. and theirs.....Got ratted out and lost the strain in a cop infestation....3 years of work down the drain...
Only just started some breeding projects again. Staying in my #'s and being legal. I was really pushing my luck back then......Now, it's legal in my state.....Still, until the state sorts out new laws. I'm following my medical licencing rules. However, they have just made it legal for me to sell "overages" to dispensaries again.....
To the "targeted" thing you mention. Yes, very much so.
Getting my ducks in a row for a 3 strain crossing with backing to get specific plant structural results. There will be some shift in the buzz type but hope the backing may bring me back closer to the original crossing.....I expect this project to take around 2 years to complete.... Not rushing it. Looking for specific results, from specific pairings....
Peace
