If you aren't inclined to build something with 6 or 8 boards or whatever the number, just pick up 2*260XL kits or even 2*320XL.
I was planning on grabbing heatsinks with the 288s but those 120s and 132s sound appealing. Which boards will give me the most canopy penetration and most bountiful harvest

I haven't used the 120s or 132s but they do sound appealing due to no needed heatsinks and ability to spread the light better. For simplicity I buy the DIY kits but if I was into building and I had the cash and I had to buy new lights I'd do a ceiling made of 132s lol

I currently use the Nichia based 324s (no longer made, I think), 288v1, 288v2, and I have a 304. (or a Nichia 320XL, 2*260XL, and a 90 watt 304)

I can get the 288s with heatsink around $53 before s&h which would actually run roughly around the same price of a build with 120 boards. There's more info avail on the 288s than the 120s but I'm open minded to whatever would work best. I've even looked into led strips it seems that's what's best for coverage. But like I stated earlier I'm looking for whatever's gonna get me to 2gpw. I've been researching for roughly 2 weeks now and still only have a slight idea on what direction I wanna go. I don't even know what driver to go with for 6 boards or better. All my previous calculations have been for 4 boards

Like above poster says, try for 30-35 real watts/sft.

At least four pcs of 288s to get enough power for plants during flowering stage.
Maybe you could have a look at Mars SP series. They add heat sink on the board.
I used QB and Mars new light. Almost the same performance. But i thought the extra heat sink and help lower the temp somehow.

450 to 500 watts of Cobs if ya wanna fill that 4 x 4. Fuck Mars and its pink lighting (I never saw a purple or pink SUN).

HLG Quantum boards, Timber Grow Lights, Rapid LED, Cobkits, Cobshop, Amare, California Light Works (need good air flow usin this in a tent, lots of AF)....

your best lighting options above
