Rent house garage grow 1st time

I have a 5x5 tent in my garage. I vent upward to the vent space at the peak of the roof.

I live in an area that gets stupid hot. 30-40 days over 100 degrees. I use a 12k btu Sharp floor unit. It keeps my tent around 70 and is unfortunately and all or none unit. I vent the exhaust for that out if the window in our garage

Don't cheat yourself on lighting, its very important. As said above, you are probably going to want at least a decent LED like a quantum.
You can go cheap lights in other ways, say using a cost-effective ballast for an HID or a cost effective HID bulb. A cheap LED is an entirely different thing, and @ 200 some bucks you are already halfway to a decent light.

For the $400-$500 range on an LED light for a 2x4 what would you go with or recommend? I’m new to all this and don’t want to regret my light purchase. I would like to go the LED route though. I looked over the viparspectra website and really didn’t see what the difference was over the Mars brand but again this is my first grow. The dispensary down the street has the viparspectra brand for the clones they sell.

For this light purchase I don’t know enough about the DIY stuff. Was going to be ordering my setup this evening just undecided on lighting at this point.

Any help would be appreciated. I will post what all I order once I do get it ordered.

There's a good amount to understand why mars and via are poor performing; this somewhat will scratch the surface to understanding some of the measurements behind them;

Also lets say they claim its a 300 watt (equal to 600w hps claim) light by saying that it has 30 pieces of 10 watt diodes. (10x30=300) Which sounds like it makes sense. But it only pulls 135w at the wall. That means its a 135 watt light, not 300 watts. A watt at the wall is a watt reguardless of how many diodes or whatever. Those blurples can be misleading on top of their poor performance. (Again, this is all from my limited understanding, so maybe take it with a grain of salt)
Lots of people unknowingly buy these lights just because they hear how good led is, but that doesnt make all leds equal. They aren't bad for clone and seeds (blurples only use imo, although not worth the price compared to t5's) as theyre rather weak and seeds/clones don't like a lot juice off the bat.


Now, as for a recommendation; I just ordered 2 kits of the 3000k for a 4x4 myself just because they're so easy to assemble in comparison to strips and cobs because the parts list is already picked for you.

3000k option is best suited for veg and flower, 4000k is typically only for veg.

Minimal assembly, dimmable, and great PAR spread because of the board design. Basically plug and play, especially if you use the prebuilt option. This is probably one of the the easier options if you're not overly electrically savy like myself, no guessing or numbers, they did it for ya, just assemble, plug, and go. I believe there's also a video on youtube for assembly which is rather easy if you dont go the prebuilt route and want to save that 70-75 bucks or whatever it is.

I didn't see anything mentioned on the height of your tent. Get the tallest one possible. At least 6', higher / taller is better.

Cement for floor? If so, it may not get too hot in the garage. Just put a 6" fan in the tent to circulate air, virgin carbon filter inside tent and exhaust into the garage. If you plan the grow try not to harvest in August, probably your most humid month.

Bowl trimmers are a great time saver when it comes to larf/popcorn/lowers, but aren't really meant for mids or colas. If you're actually producing decent quality flower.

320 w xl qb with three boards. Would be good fit to the 4’ width and still
Cover the 2’ length. Could use it all the way through with the 3000k. Dial it down during earlier stages and crank that bad boy up a little at a time and see how plants respond. $477 but it will pay for itself in long run instead of having to replace cheap ones over and over. I have the 260w QB V2 and don’t regret spending the $330 at all.

I've seen some good reviews on viparspectra. I assume he doesn't have 1200 for a cool or Spyder. I don't know much about LEDs, but I have done some half assed research on them. I like the old HPS/Metal Halide. Always used them. Also, cool avatar.

The "good reviews" for Vipar were likely on their Amazon site, yeah? The fact is that they are about as efficient watt for watt as an SE HID light. If I was shopping for a really small space(2x2 or 2x3) I might consider a blurple over a 150 or 250 HID - if money were an issue. But for a few dollars more, you can get a proper PCB setup.

And no, you don't need to shell out Spyder like dough to get a decent setup for a 5x5.

If I were to build(not going the DIY route) out a 5X5, I'd run a 315 in the middle, with Veros at the corners.

Hell yeah. I want to try out LEDs and the ceramic ones. There have been so many advancements it's crazy. I'm still doing the old school ones with a magnetic ballasts. I'm sure they are better now, but in 2012 magnetics were noticeably brighter than the Phantom from Hydrofarm and Lumatek. I'm sure they have gotten better, but I'm not going to fix anything that isn't broken.

The only thing I don't like is how easy they light burn plants that get too tall. Luckily the Bodega Bubblegum I'm running is a medium height, not a tall one. The last tall ones I grew all wanted to be 5ft tall, no matter if you gave them the veg/bloom transition or not. Fockin Sativas. It was the frost monster, though.

I was growing when people started doing the digital MH/HPS ballasts. I feel old, lol

I watched a couple of videos on how to make your own LEDs.

I like trees. You can get faster turnaround by having more plants, but I only lose a month vegging and I like all the medium size buds.

I’m in the same boat. Last year was my first summer grow in the garage. We had a very hot summer mid 30c. I can’t vent outside so it’s vented inside the garage. The exhaust in the tent never let it get above 28c. Without an AC. Not sure what summers a like in OK but you should be fine.
I was growing with a bridgelux build though. So if you’re growing with a HID you may run into trouble.

Update 3/5/2019:

For the most part I have received everything I’ve ordered. Set the tent up in the garage this evening. Had a major discovery on venting the exhaust... I found an old dryer vent for when someone had a gas dryer. When they put the electric dryer in they changed the location of it and capped that one off. I have my exhaust going to the old dryer vent that wasn’t being used. I’m going for auto flower seeds and just got them in the mail ( pic attached). I have a new heater for the garage coming that should keep my temp in check for the cold. Humidity is low so far in the tent, need to figure that out still. Once I get the soil and pots and figure out the humidity I’m germinating the seeds.

Any comments or constructive criticism is welcome. First time grow and I will post updates throughout the grow.
