pollenation selection question

Good morning guys...finally got my camera operational and thought I'd try it out. I've been pondering this and thought I'd seek RUI opinions.

I planted 11 Matanuska TF seeds awhile back. All popped and once they got big enough I topped them both for manifold training and to flower the clones to confirm gender.

Under 12/12 the plants stretched of course and revealed that I had 4 males and 7 females. Now to complete their destiny I'm going to allow several of the male clones to pollinate several of the females.

My delimma is that there seems to be a tall pheno and a short pheno. Assuming that the tall ones are more sativa leaning...which is my preferred smoke...should I just pollinate the two tall ones to increase chances that seeds will reflect that sativa orientation.

If I had room I'd do both the short ones and the tall ones. The other thought is to put them all together and do a group orgy...open pollenation. Like in nature.

In the picture from left to right, Tall male...tall female...short male...short female.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Some people think the first plants to produce pollen should be destroyed. Others think ya should rub the stems and check for smells. Others check for resin gland concentration on males.
The theory is that since weed reverts to low thc in the wild that the first plants to produce pollen would be the first to pollinate the wild marijuana. Therefore since it reverts to low thc the early pollen producers must be responsible. It all sounds far fetched to me but I have no real world experience. Where did u get that seed? Dr Gt?

That's an interesting idea...and will definitely take that into consideration. The seeds came from a fairly new op up in Alaska. don't know the exact story but they're old school AK growers. A RUI friend referred me to them. Alaska Cannabis Cache

When selecting parents you always wish to select for traits you desire. Without having run those before you may wanna pollinate a lower branch on each plant.

Height is just one trait. You can have a tall plant that has the indica high. So without having run them before to select the most desirable phenotype you just don't know.

Good thought Renfro. Mostly I was wanting seeds to preserve the genetics for me. But why not improve things if I can. But all I have is their height difference at this point. I stroked the stems and they all had similar odors though a couple were way stronger...so I'm leaning in that direction.

If you wanna preserve the characteristics of a specific phenotype you could use STS to make femmed beans from a pheno you really like. Just cross it with itself.

It sounds fairly easy...though timing and silver dosage must be important. Good luck on that. I've never grown a fem...well till last week. Got some Kali Mist fem seeds as freebies...and well, what could I do. Not going to throw them out. So I have three at tiny seedling stage...

Yeah you have to mix a diluted solution of silver nitrate and sodium thiosulfate with a little dish soap as a surfactant. Gotta store it in a light proof bottle and it's good for about a month once mixed. From what I gather you spray once every 5 days right when the lights go out for the first 3 weeks. One can use a q-tip to just dab a little on each node if you wanna be selective and have a plant that just makes the pollen sacs on a few buds. This is just what I have learned from reading. Got my chemicals on the way from amazon.

And then once you get pollen...you use it to self pollinate the same plant. Way cool that you can do it selectively. You obviously don't have any issues with the micro-seed thing that causes popping when they burn. Several threads on that awhile back.

I have heard of people putting nylon stockings around pollinated buds to keep the pollen in, not sure how effective that is tho.

One can also store pollen in the freezer for a while, use silica gel packs. Can stay viable that way for 6 - 12 months.

Oh and they also recommend mixing the pollen with toasted flour like 1:10 ratio. The pollen is so concentrated that you can make a little go a lot farther that way.

If you have pollen sacs that just dont open, cut them off and let them dry in a bowl then open them to get the pollen out.

Thanks for the pollen hints Renfro. I just removed some Black Widow clones from my little pollination station...cleaned it good and collected a bit of pollen...and put all the tall Matanuskas in there.
They had gone through stretch and so I bent them all over. Actually worked out good and hopefully will also get some pollen to store for later...though truthfully I don't know what I'd cross it with. I have to have a good reason to make a cross of different strains.

I had a single survivor of an old seed pack G13/widow which grows nicely, and to preserve genetics I pollinated a clone from her with my black widow. G13...double widow.
