I don't understand why people defend brutal dictators. Doesn't matter if they are left, right, religious, secular or atheist, brutal dictatorships should be suppressed.

Big shock there. My guess is that it reaped benefits far beyond what they imagined and continues to to this day. Not only did they help facilitate the movement of many of Bernie's supporters into whiney little bitches but they also got a whole bunch that are apologists for Putin and every other two bit dictator.
