I am going to have to look up the wick system to see it in action. The pump with the timer sounds good.
Large watering globes might work if you have enough of them and depending on stage of growth.

What size container, what medium and how big are the plants? People planning on leaving for periods - this is where larger containers help. If you have a 7-10 gallon container of peat mix or FF or whatever you can soak the hell out of it and be good for a week during veg. Personally automated stuff sucks if it goes down and you are counting on it to deliver small amounts regularly. And they can dry up a lot and still be good.
Haven't been able to go any where over night for years. It really sucks but I'm finally in a spot where I'll be able to automate soon. At least the flower room. I still gotta figure out something for my mom's as I keep very small mom's and they need watered daily. Thinking ebb and flow for em but prob won't get that done til winter when redo veg room. Hopefully by next summer I'll have it all set up so maybe I can go somewhere. My old lady gonna kill me I don't start taking her olaces.

I think you might be in danger of setting up a siphon situation with the bucket higher then the plant. Could cause overwatering or even flooding.

I once set up a drip irrigation using two regular timers. One set to run 8 hours a day and the other one plugged into the first timer set at 15 minutes. Using those settings I would get one 15 minute watering every 3 days. Or vary settings to what you need...

I got 3 gallon pots with soil. I thought about putting the pots in flat totes with a few inches of water in them to soak up water.

Those are kind of small for sure. I’m running a mini-SOG. 9 plants in 3 gallon bags and they use the feed and water pretty quickly.

Blumats classic. I was gone for 12 days hoping they would survive. They did. Better to use 2 blumat per plant if container bigger than 3 gallon (11 litres). Have empty tote under plant in case of overflow. My plants were in flower and drank 4 litres each. Nute/water Tote should be same height as top of container to give more water. Light proof tote also. I fed them greenleaf megacrop. Water them good before you leave. Good luck..

I just finished building a 7 plant automatic watering system for my personal use, here're some pictures,
This is the control box with the power supply, fuses, relays, and wifi control (ESP-32S).
Not shown are 7 soil moisture sensors attached to a soil control "black" box located in the center of the grow that control the solenoids by way of a local wifi network hosted by a Raspberry Pi.
The pump and valve box.
