Is it my imagination or does the smell increase about 40 mins before the lights come on?

No it's not your imagination, it definitely does. I believe it's because the terpens aroma is more active in the dark periods. I read something about that many moons ago. I can't for the life of me remember what the natural reasoning is exactly.

Cool. I have a wireless SensorPush that monitors and downloads Rh and temp. I’ve noticed there is a spike in Rh 10-20 minutes before lights on. How do they know the lights are going to come on? Are they preparing for a future event?

The circadian rhythm, its a natural process that affects all living things. Its like an internal clock plants use to regulate glucose use at night for respiration when theres no light to produce food. I think thats probably where the x amount of extra dark hours prior to harvest comes from.
