As the 2016 election cycle heats up, one can expect more scrutiny to be focused upon the most high profile candidates – along with some false accusations. Today we take a look the claim that Bernie Sanders has never proposed a bill which passed.

SANDERS BILLS WHICH PASSED
Several memes, such as the one below, have suggested that Sanders never proposed a bill which passed in his decades in office. While some of the other claims cited below may delve into a gray area, Sanders’ history of sponsored legislation is simple to verify without refutation.

If we look at Sanders’ record at Congress.gov, we can see that he has in fact sponsored a small number of bills which made it to the President’s desk. Although Sanders sponsored hundreds of pieces of legislation which date back to 1991, only three have become law.

Of all the bills that Sanders sponsored, we have the following breakdown:

  • 357 introduced by Sanders
  • 190 were considered by committee
  • 12 were considered by the floor
  • 1 failed one chamber
  • 6 passed one chamber
  • 3 passed both chambers, went to the President, and became law
Those three bills, according to Congress.gov, are:

S.893 Introduced 5/8/13. The Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2013 which became law in November 2013

S.885 Introduced 5/7/13. A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 35 Park Street in Danville, Vermont, as the “Thaddeus Stevens Post Office” became law in November 2014.

H.R.5245 Introduced 4/27/06. To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 1 Marble Street in Fair Haven, Vermont, as the “Matthew Lyon Post Office Building” became law in August 2006.

Thus, the claim that Sanders have never sponsored a bill that passed is untrue. Detractors may point out that two of those three bills merely renamed post offices, but even without those, Sanders does have one significant bill to his name.

Further, Sanders is cited as a co-sponsor on 203 other bills which have become law.

SUMMARY
It is incorrect to state that Bernie Sanders never sponsored a bill that became law. He penned a total of three bills which were enacted as law, although two of those simply renamed post offices. Sanders is listed as a co-sponsor on over 200 pieces of legislation.

Thanks for confirming what I said. Because it is obvious that you couldn't understand the first time, what I said was:

"Name one bill that he sponsored during the 16+ years he's served as Senator that made a difference in any of those issues."

Merely introducing a bill that goes nowhere is just for show. Bernie doesn't work well with others. He can't get anything done. Not a single bill that he sponsored made a difference in those areas.

Can you sound out the words and figure it out all by yourself or do you need help?

Well let's get real here, he has accomplished a lot. Just as you have said, it's a marathon and not a race and Bernie has people talking about real issues at a much quicker rate than if he wasn't around. Give the man his respect. Dude is a warrior.

no,

No he has not. His record shows it. The junior Senator from my state has served 4 fewer years and he has a gotten a lot more done compared to Bernie. Jeff Merkely. Look him up if you like:

Bernie is not a warrior, he's a seagull. Flies around squawking, eats other people lunches then shits on their heads.

Getting shit on by a bird is supposed to be lucky, you sound like a lucky man. I believe he has done a lot more good than can be easily quantified by accomplishments. You point to somebody who accomplished something in 4 years....in this time and space which wouldn't have existed without Bernie losing for decades because America wasn't ready. That's where the republicans are killing us, they got long game and we throw our own through the grinder because of perceived failings against the sometimes impossible.

Different culture, I suppose. But hey, if you like getting shit on by Bernie, have at it. You'd fit right in with the other Bernie bots

You can believe what you like, I prefer facts. The Democratic Party has been pushing universal healthcare for decades and they are making progress unlike Bernie and his woefully incomplete embarrassment of a healthcare bill.

Here we go again. Another Bernie bot is telling us that we have to support Bernie or Trump will win. Sorry, not going to drink that koolaid. Republicans won a lot of states because voters in those states are more conservative than you'd like to believe. The times are changing though. Within ten years, Democrats will hold the majorities in many states that are now red. Who is taking the long view?

I'm not the one trying to force gay people to beg for permission to be married or seeking to force black people to associate with people they prefer not to, that's you.

It's sad how you hate gay people and black people so much that you can't respect their right to self determine. Very sad.

I am guilty of not reading too closely at times, but I did say above that I am not supporting Bernie this time because I believe his time has passed. And once we get the Supreme Court back to a 50/50 at least then we can talk about game plans, right now we are getting trounced.

Well the polling says Bernie would have won. You don't accept the polling that's fine. Same polling said he was going to win against Clinton though when we were being sold that he wouldn't come close. The data was out there. I blame Clinton supporters for Trump more than anybody. Her supporters and the party that gave her the nomination. They are the ones I blame. They live in their own little bubble and couldn't see what was charging right at them.

Bernie couldn't even win the Democratic Party's nomination. Bernie didn't run against Trump. It's a leap of faith to use an opinion poll as a proxy for a hard fought political campaign against the right wing propaganda machine that had inside access to the Russian spy agency.

I just used a lot of words to say that poll is meaningless. The only poll that matters is an election poll.

They didn't let him win is how I see it. And like I said, polls are polls, people only believe them when their person wins.

I don't even accept that the polling says that.

Nor would it have been remotely relevant if it did. Bernie conceded defeat in June so he did not have to slog through another four months toward the general election. Kind of like saying RFK would have beat Nixon. Maybe, maybe not, we will never know because both were dead by the general election.

The thing a lot of us were slow to pick up on is that it just doesn't matter where information comes from - most people will accept it if it says what they want it to. The internet is the great equalizer.

I wish John Waters ran for President.

Oh my

"they didn't let him win". That old fake and disproven conspiracy theory again. Your theory is very dismissive of the ability of the huge majorities of black and women voters who chose Hillary over Bernie. The only group that gave Bernie a majority were white male Democratic voters.

so that theory fails on the facts.

Afterward, the evidence was reviewed mighty carefully.

Brazile: I found 'no evidence' Democratic primary was rigged

I know from endless discussions on this with others who believe your theory that you can't believe people actually voted for Hillary because they preferred her to Bernie but the facts say otherwise.

You are entitled to hold your belief as tightly as you like but there is no factual basis for your claim.
