veg growth vs light times

if i veg my plants under 18/6 they don't grow fast and just get really fat stems but little to no vertical growth and very tight internal spacing 1/4 of an inch spacing ( i find this a bad thing for running a scrog )

when i run my lights on 16/8 they start giving good vertical growth with about half an inch between nodes ( i think that's perfect spacing to scrog)

this just sounds dumb to me but its what i see and what i am experiencing. is it normal for a plant to grow less when receiving more light

Using HPS to veg under? Guessing not. Switch to it and leave the light on.

nodal spacing i read was due to spectrum not sure if that is true or what. could be strain/pheno type as well. i assume that because your now losing 2 extra hours of light that the plants assume it is time to flower naturally soon thus why it is getting taller. i am in the same boat as you but my plant is just bushy af think it's mostly a strain issue/pheno issue as i only run 18/6 in this grow. she grows nice but like you said she grows more bushy versus height but i am still scrogging her.

i am running 3k HLG 320W v2 QB's nothing else is really different/amazing tbh about my setup. just your cheap/ghetto setup only expensive thing is my lights and tent i suppose but i think i got it on sale.

no im using a old tec led and i know they are not the best but i still find it odd my plants grow better under less hours of light

maybe its spectrum or just strain of plants
You got me on this one. I know my plants have no problem putting on real weight with as few as 10-1/2 hours of light in flower. Enough so that I never run over 11/13. I used to veg under T5 the first week and MH the next month to two months. The node spacing was pretty tight. I just run HPS now and top and supercrop to deal with lankiness.

Maybe you are giving them too much light? Light too close?
Those 2 hrs less might be the optimum light the plants want.
If I run leds and batter the plants in veg with loads of light they stay very squat and short compared to HPS.
They say a more blue led spectrum ie 4000K - 5000K will produce shorter internal spacing and better for vegging but I've noticed no difference when I vegged with 3000K.
What is your old Tec led?

Like mentioned above, raise your light a little, to get them to stretch. Or, trim away some of the huge leaves blocking too much light to the smaller leaves below. That's what I do. Mine always end up really squat and bushy, because I tend to keep the light a little closer. Once I trim away some of the big fans, my plants explode! I've seen 3" to 4" of growth a day in my dwc, after trimming.

Genetics, Spectrum, DLI & Root space will effect the overall growth, both vertical stretch & horizontal growth.

Day/night temperature swing, will effect stretch by itself, the futher apart the more vertical growth.

well i was thinking the plant might of been getting too much light because i keep it around 15 inch but its only a viparspectra 130 watt so its a trash spectrum i guess or could just be me not liking compacting plants

1/4" per node is tight af, they kind of start stretching as they outgrow the light so with a 130w panel, i dont think you should worry much.

Half an inch per node is nice though, they will stretch during transition anyway, keeping them short allows you to grow more nodes in a given area at the cost of time.

In a scrog grow, a 3ft plant with 7 nodes will not yield the same as a 3ft plant with 10+

far call i was questioning that before eg whats better more smaller tops or less bugger ones .
i will know my own answer at the end my next two grows. the plant i have in flower now has 15 big tops. my last plant in flower had 45 ish small tops. i pulled 4oz from that not sure what i will pull from the 15 ish bigger tops this run
the plant i have in veg now i am trying to get around 60 plus tops.

pretty much im trying to counter the stunted vertical growth you get then topping
