my 2 cents:
first of all, don't expect to make any money if its your first grow for like 8 months or longer.... if ur starting from seed you'll have to sex the plants, re-vedge, clone, vedge, clone, vedge (or top, vedge, top, vedge)... in any case if you looking to make money you'll have to get ur plant numbers up.
second, it's going to cost around 2k just for the initial equipment and materials, etc. for a decent size (profitable) grow op.
third, if you don't have the right location don't even consider it... ie; NO ONE is ever going to enter the building other than yourself. Period. And change the locks.

as far as people getting all offended about someone wanting to grow and then sell weed, like fdd2blk said... Have any of you Ever Bought Weed before?! It didn't fall out of the sky.
Here was my last experience with 'growing for profit': i used (3) 1000w lights in a 7' by 15' ft grow area for the vedge/flowering chamber. (The Metal Halide positioned between the two HPS) I had (9) 4' flourescents 3/4 cool 1/4 warm in the clone/vedge chamber. I'd pull about 150 clones. (success was about 95% with Dip 'N Gro and those 'tree bark plugs' in a humidity tray with the corners cut off and misting with water.) I'd use the strongest 72-84 clones for plants.
after things got going i'd harvest about 4lbs of dried weight sinsemilla. i sold my stuff too cheap i'm sure at about 1400-1600 per lb. I only sold to 2 different people. If i ever did it again, i'd try to only sell to -1- person only.
my level of paranoia was increased. it raises ur stress level a notch. (if ur not worried about losing ur freedom ur a moron.) every time the helicopters went over i'd run to cut off the lights... and the damn things went over pretty frequently. I did this crap in the middle of a florida ghetto trailer court in a 7 by 22 foot trailer... using bursts from a ozone generator. I lived in a 6 by 6 foot area.... so obviously i needed the money
i also had a full time job at the time making like 330 a week. So making another "250 a week" or so on top of that actually enabled me to save money for the first time in my life.
so... at that rate i was bringing in around 12k a year on top of my other job (not exactly living like a rock star.) If i ever were to grow again, i'd try to add one more light to the setup and make some other adjustments and try to get up to around 18-20k a year. my only interest in doing this now is because i'm tired of seeing all my jobs move to mexico and china... and want to be able to be self employed when the shite once again hits the fan.

I know the rates of which I'd be able to sell my buds for. I have contacts. I would be selling in pounds only, with the exception of a few very close friends.
My thinking is to do this outdoor, not indoor, because I want larger yields. I do not think that this is very crazy at all. Listen! I will have 50 plants (assume they are all healthy females) and will hope to get half a pound of every one of them. That is minimum too, because you can yield much higher on outdoor plants as many of us know. That in total would be 25 pounds.
If you take 25 pounds and you multiply that by what I would be able to sell it for, which will be $4,200, you get $105,000. I have seen people with a lot more than 50 plants going. On RIU you see it all the time. But yeah boom you do that and you have earned 6 figures from working from May to October.

He is a retired grower form norcal who tells me that it is when people try and hit these marks in cali even under prop 215 that they become targets...
obviously, feds are never gonna go after the closet grower....unless tommy chong grows in his closet...but at what point do you think it becomes juicy for them to take a bite out of crime.
