What had happened was. . . . . . .

There is this facebook page for the College of Rock and Roll Knowledge radio show, and I was looking to see if there had been any monumental musical events on this date, suitable for posting. When I saw it was Santana's birthday, it was pure "squirrel" reaction. I'd clicked on today's musical birthdays, opened you tube and google searches and started posting West Side Story videos before I realized where I was at.

I keep a little canna banana bread around for days when it's too crowded for me to smoke. Today was going to be one of those days, so I ate a half slice this morning. Then things changed, so I did have plenty of smoking opportunities. I should have just said no to that 2nd one hitter of #5 Random Bud X TPD. I'm still high AF.

I imagine there were two silently-expelled breaths when the Lunar Module ascent stage fired up as expected/hoped.
The next lunar mission, Apollo 12, would launch on 1969 November 14.
maybe a few more than that ;)
"Nasa estimated that it had taken more than 400,000 engineers, scientists and technicians to accomplish the moon landings."

There's a scene in In the Shadow of the Moon (the most lyrical A11 documentary I've seen; highly recommended) where Armstrong transmits "Houston, ah ... Tranquillity Base here; the Eagle has landed".

Capcom Charlie Duke replied "You got a bunch of guys starting to turn blue."

But if you watch the video, there's one of the ground crew who fist-pumps at his console once they're safely down. At once, Gene Kranz makes the "cool it" sign. This level of professional restraint is no longer the norm. Behold 50 years of change. (Note that the fist-pumper is embarrassed.)

I'll bet they were pinching holes in their seats before that.

'We had 15 seconds of fuel left': Buzz Aldrin on the nervy moon landing.
It was a feat that succeeded by the finest of margins. “We touched down, and I think the estimate, not because somebody put a dipstick in the fuel to see how much was left, but it was calculations and information on board, we probably had about 15 seconds of fuel left.”

Hear Buzz Aldrin tell the story of the first moon landing

My daughter was born 30 years ago today.

Wife's water broke after midnight, made the drive to Pittsburgh easier, no traffic.

Everything was done by day break so I drove home to let the dog out. Except I drove west instead of north and wound up by a sign that said Ohio - 8 miles.

Had to use a map to locate the turnpike to get home, lost an hour. Still don't know why I drove west.

Washington is not a place to live in. The rents are high, the food is bad, the dust is disgusting and the morals are deplorable. Go West, young man, go West and grow up with the country.

From "The College of Rock and Roll Knowledge" facebook page:

On July 27, 1977, the Grateful Dead released their 9th studio LP "Terrapin Station." It was the first album that the Grateful Dead released on Arista Records after releasing other albums on its own Grateful Dead Records.

According to Dennis McNally, Jerry Garcia conceived the idea for the song "Terrapin Station Part One" while driving across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.

Reaction to the album was mixed as many fans thought that it was overproduced and not in keeping with the Grateful Dead's more unpolished free-form style, while others believe it to be their greatest musical achievement.

Happy 42nd Birthday to "Terrapin Station"!!!

On July 27, 1979, an Indian art store in Scottsdale, Arizona owned by Alice was hit by a fire bomb that was thrown through a rear window. Over $200,000 worth of native American artifacts were destroyed, as well as some of his gold records which there.

Alice said the biggest loss was $75,000 worth of Hopi Indian dolls.

Alice felt he knew why the store was attacked. He said "Maybe it was some disco-music freak. I've been making some positive anti-disco remarks lately."

This happened 40 years ago today. Alice is still touring. Been to a disco lately?

Johnson signs Medicare into law

On this day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signs Medicare, a health insurance program for elderly Americans, into law. At the bill-signing ceremony, which took place at the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, former President Harry Truman was enrolled as Medicare’s first beneficiary and received the first Medicare card.

Johnson wanted to recognize Truman, who, in 1945, had become the first president to propose national health insurance, an initiative that was opposed at the time by Congress.

The Medicare program, providing hospital and medical insurance for Americans age 65 or older, was signed into law as an amendment to the Social Security Act of 1935. Some 19 million people enrolled in Medicare when it went into effect in 1966.

In 1972, eligibility for the program was extended to Americans under 65 with certain disabilities and people of all ages with permanent kidney disease requiring dialysis or transplant. In December 2003, President George W. Bushsigned into law the Medicare Modernization Act, which added outpatient prescription drug benefits to Medicare.

Medicare is funded entirely by the federal government and paid for in part through payroll taxes. Medicare is currently a source of controversy due to the strain it puts on the federal budget. Throughout its history, the program also has been plagued by fraud—committed by patients, doctors and hospitals—that has cost taxpayers billions of dollars.

Medicaid, a state and federally funded program that offers health coverage to certain low-income people, was also signed into law by President Johnson on July 30, 1965, as an amendment to the Social Security Act.

The first legislative assembly in English North America convened in Jamestown, Va.

American Democracy Began 399 Years Ago Today In Jamestown, Virginia

American Evolution recognizes the convening of the first representative legislative assembly in English North America. The meeting of the first General Assembly, which took place from July 30 through August 4, 1619, in the church in Jamestown, VA, formed the basis of today's representative system of government in the United States of America.

This first General Assembly was comprised of two male settlers representing each of the 11 major settlement areas in Virginia. Governor Sir George Yeardley presided over the first convening of this new form of government, which divided political and judicial power between the governor, a council appointed by the Virginia Company of London, and the new General Assembly. The General Assembly also acted as a high court of justice and heard complaints of a judicial nature.

On July 30, 1968, The Beatles' Apple Boutique, a psychedelic clothing store located at 94 Baker Street in London, closed for business after seven months.

The band and its friends had the pick of the remaining inventory the night before, and 51 years ago today, the Apple Boutique employees were instructed to simply let people in off the street to take whatever merchandise they wanted. The store was closed that evening for good.

The store had a huge problem with shoplifting / theft.

We guess Love wasn't the only thing people wanted for free.

Anybody ever go to the store / boutique while it was open?
