Help with HLG-320H-C2100B

Hi everybody, new guy here. I have a slight problem with my light setup. I Have HLG-320H-C2100B connected with 4 cob led serial without potentiometer - I am getting no light whatsoever, I thought my driver was defect and bought new 1 but still nothing. Checked wires and they are sitting tight... what might the problem be?

Could be a totally defective cob though normally one string might be faulty and the rest would light up.
But if one is not allowing current through then none of them will light up with series wiring.

What exact cobs do you have?
Can you post a picture of the set up?
Do you have a multi meter?

Thanks, thanks and thanks. I bought used set so I am not sure what cob it is. Although I would like firstly to make sure I am connecting it right so: serial or parallel?
Is multi meter same as potentionmeter also known as dimmer? If yes, I do not have one. The guy that sold that to me said it is not necessary to make it work!
Btw I will ask him and try to find out what kind of cob it is.

A multi meter is a tool that will help you determine if current is passing through the cob and tell you a bunch of stuff.
lol I have barely used mine to be honest so im not sure how you would determine the situation if a cob has zero current going through it.

Yes so it should be wired series with the driver you have , but really we need to know the cob or test one to find the voltage.
If they are say 72v cobs then they would be out of the range the voltage that driver could supply. In which case im not 100% on how it behaves, it may blink or not light.
Series wiring would go plus from driver to plus on first cob then minus on that cob to plus on the next and so on until you get to the final cob which runs back to the negative on the driver.

Multi meters cost very little to buy from a hardware or electronics store.

I will shout out a couple of people who would better know the ins and outs of the best way to test it.

Can you shed some light on best way to use a multi meter in this situation and would a cob setup over the voltage of the driver go into blink mode or just not light?
 
The hlg320-c2100 puts out 76-152vdc. One single cob wouldnt be a good to hook up to that driver. Even if they are 72v cobs 76v at 2.1A is kinda high for a single cob. Not all cobs. But most. And not knowing what cob it is. Makes it tricky. Can you take any pics of the light.

One single cob hook up would be pushing 159 watts through a single cob. Way too much. And open circuit that driver puts out 156vdc
 
If they are 72v cobs you can only run two. 144vdc on that driver. And you're still pushing them pretty hard. 151w per cob. That driver isnt recommended if they are 72v cobs. If they are 36v cobs. Then you need to hook it up in series. Or series parallel to make them run softer. Series parallel would be two groups of 2 parallel then series back to the driver.


Even good cree 3590 cobs are 36vdc with a max of 3.6A which is only 129.6w per cob. So running them at 151w is not a good idea. Right off the top of my head. I dont know a cob that can handle over that.
 
If they are 72v cobs all 4 in series is way over the shutdown parameters of that driver. 160-175vdc pull on that driver will kick it off. And you'llget no light.
 
You can do all 4 if you do hook two up in parallel and the other two up in parallel. Then series to the driver. That will give them 72v at 1050mA which puts each cob at 75.6w which is how your gonna have to hook it up to use that driver if they are 72v cobs. But id bet they are 36v
 
Ok guys, that is alot of info for a guy who does not understand so much on these things, but I wrote to the seller and after I get an answer I will let you know and so will we "together/meaning you" (lol) find out how it should be connected. Seems like it depends finally on that and while waiting for an answer I will buy a multi meter. I can't say enough how thankfull I am.
 
I saw it in the picture turned on before i purchased used setup, but the seller told me he got help to connect it and the electrician that did the job told him that is series connected and so he told me. Since I could not get it on i thought it was damaged on transportation and purchased new driver, it came today... pictures comes here soon but I do not habe any now because it hangs on the growtent and I have Parkinson so I am limited to do that kind of job to often. So I kinda have to wait until my body lets me work...
 
Right well now we know what it is we can eliminate the chance of a dodgy cob.

You cant power one or two with that driver but you can power 3 together.
So go by process of illimination and trying different combos of 3 of the 4 you have together.

There are 4 combinations to try so your going to have to make sure you dont mix them up.

I see some connector blocks in the pics so hopefully each cob wire has one. If not snip the wire and fasten a connector block.

It shouldnt take long.

There is probably a bloody simple way of doing this but its the best i can come up with to know if there is one faulty cob or soldered connection.
This will only work if its only one bad cob or connection.

First thing to do is double and tripple check for loose connection on every part of the wiring.
Check your fuse in your plug
Check your socket your plugging into actually works ( you never know)

Thats the best advice i can offer im afraid.
Maybe others have a better idea.
 
Thanks, I will be not able to perform any of that because I am going away for 2 weeks in a vacation booked long time ago -bad timing though- but I will be trying whatever is necessary to make it work, so please come with any kind of tips after finding out necessary info so I have work to do when I get back.
