Is there a huge difference in yield? Ive seen people grow monsters in 3gallons that seem like the same size as 5gals. Heck, ive seen monsters in solo cups. Should i not waste my time with 5 gal bags?

I cannot speak for yield.
For coco multi-feed dtw, 5 gallon only if vegging long enough for roots to fill and air prune. (bearded fabric)
I use 2 and 3gallon indoor.
5 and 7 gallon when I did outdoor coco trees.

Do a 5 gallon in coco if you are going to fill a 3x3 or 4x4 with a single plant.
Otherwise 2 or 3 gallons is plenty.
You can still fill the 4x4 in a 2 or 3 gallon, but you'll be watering it alot. If you run drippers, maybe that's OK.

Yield per plant? Yes, absolutely. Yield per light? No, not in my experience. Yield per year? No, definitely not.
My first coco grow, I packed 16 2.5 gallon pots into a tent, and got 2.5 pounds. The plants were enormous. I didn't plan on growing redwoods, it was just that I didn't realize how big they were going to get in coco. By the time I figured it out and cut back on the nutes, I was just buried in plants. And yeah, I got a terrific yield.
The problem, though, was that I spent about 7 weeks on vegging. Over the course of a year, that wastes too much time - it adds up to enough time to almost get a whole nother grow in. Now I use 1-gallon pots, veg for about 2 weeks, and plant 25 in each tent. And still get about 2.5 pounds most runs. I get just as much bud mass (and better quality buds) out of lollipops than I was getting out of christmas trees.

Wow I was thinking exactly that and doing a sog grow. I really don't want to veg that long. I kept bouncing back and forth on what to do but u have changed my mind.

Get a second tent for veg only and it becomes a non-issue.

When I ran coco dtw, I would use 1.75g square containers (with extra holes drilled into the sides to let roots breathe). I would add 25% perlite. Drip 4x during lights on to 10% runoff, and once during lights out. 4 plants like that fill up a 3x3 scrog in a 4-foot tent under 600w hps easy peasy.

You can learn a ton from that. What I do is very similar in many ways, but adapted for coco and for my particular growing space. I didn't copy it, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't influence the way I set up my program. It took a leap of faith for me to deliberately grow smaller plants, but I'm glad I closed my eyes and jumped. Everything's so much easier - most of each plant's yield is just one big, long top bud, and the smaller buds further down the stalk are much better quality because they have much better exposure to light and air. If you get into any fights with insects, it's a lot easier to get at the bastards. I also top water, and this makes it easier to do that, too. All and all, it just seems to make everything so much more efficient, top to bottom.

I actually have a third tent. I have two 1000W tents, 12 on and 12 off, alternating so one of them is always lit. That means no 12-hour long,1000 watt spike in power every day, in case anyone is curious enough to monitor power usaqe. Then, I also have a smaller 600W tent for clones, seedlings, and first stage of veg. From seedling or rooting to 12/12 is about a month, month and a half, at 20 hours a day, and most of the vegging is during that period.
Then I up pot them and give them about 5 days to establish their "big girl" root systems, and they go straight to a 12/12 tent. They continue to veg for a week or two before flowering. I consider them in veg until they clearly show sex.

I've been growing mostly in 3gal grow bags. Just recently though. I discovered an issue with 12 week sativas. This was a new problem for me, but I read a post implying that over time...being rootbound can cause overwatering symptoms. Everything gets crammed in there after awhile...there's just not enough room for nute solution. Might have to go with 5 gal for sativas...but for a 8 week hybrid 3 is great and 2 can be done fairly easily.
