@OneHitDone how many hours did you run the lights?

"The formula for calculating DLI is: μmol m-2s-1 (or PPFD) x (3600 x photoperiod) / 1,000,000 = DLI (or moles/m2/day)"

DLI
Butterhead lettuce14-16
The total output listed on that lamp is 152 PPFD but doesn't say at what height. Even if you were getting the full 152 on the plants and ran it 24/7 you'd get a DLI of 13.

It has been a long time since algebra for me so correct me if I'm wrong

(DLI * 1,000,000) / (3600 * photoperiod) = PPFD ?

So you'd want a minimum of 162.03 PPFD actually reaching the plants if ran 24/7.
Lights were 18/6
Your calcs look correct at a glance but the one thing I have noticed is that published DLI and PPFD #'s that were most likely derived from sun grown plant research do not seem to directly cross over to LED lighting. I have also seen others mention the same experience.
I am not certain the total ppf of a 100W metal halide but am certain that it is less than the QB 65.
I am also certain that the plants did not want either more intensity or longer photo period of the light emitted by the HLG 65. Just look how compact, bonsai'd, and tip burned the LED plants were in comparison to the Metal Halide plants.

Earlier I read a study done with basil that if there wasn't enough blue light the plants wouldn't transpire enough and would blister and I believe that lack of transpiration can be a cause of tip burn.

Unfortunately my growing knowledge hasn't been used in a few years ago I've forgotten or became hazy on these things.

The dli numbers were on an led website, but no idea where they pulled them from.

I guess the different spectrum could throw off those numbers but it'd surprise me if they were far off.

I brought in some fish for winter and looking at setting up a 4x8 flood table again to filter the water. My Vero cobs have fried or dissipated into other functions so I was looking at what would work best now with the led changes. I'd heard about the strips but hadn't researched them. Saw this thread and wanted to see what people had gotten to work well.

Seems like most of those what where actually trying to grow things other than cannabis have bounced.
@SSGrower was doing pretty good with diffusing the led's with plastic if I remember correctly but I think he's mad at me over that guy that ripped people off and didn't deliver on lights they had paid for?
Anyways, hopefully more will show interest in lighting tech that benefits the broad spectrum of horticultural applications and realize that there is more than just cannabis :peace:

It's not legal here but I think hemp is or will be soon. I haven't looked into the law and how they will know not to raid people growing hemp or how they tell it doesn't have thc.

Anyways as it's a filter for a big fish tank I I'm just looking to soak up nitrogen and don't want to go with flouros again and stacking grow tables I don't have height to spread mh or hps out. I'm currently looking at the bridgelux strips. 3 or 4 of the 4 footers over a 4'x8' table maybe?

I got torqued when the discussions on lighting reverted to personal attacks. IDK if whytewidow was ripping anyone off but I did get pissed at your responses which you did apologize for. I just found that it was not worth getting that worked up about so I unfollowed most of the led spectrum threads I was following.

A high intensity incomplete spectrum (white phosphor leds) is the key to purple petioles (non genetic). This issue can be resolved via nutrient regimine but we have a lot of work that can still be don with the light source. The plastic I was using not only diffused but shifted red. We need IR and UV.

Yeah good luck growing hemp next season(2020) with the new USDA regs....... Too risky running hot and entire crop gets destroyed with no insurance covering it, blah

I heard the rumors about Whyte, but no concrete evidence came forth? Scratching it off as bullshit until further notice.....

Apparently the latest thing in Oregon at the moment is a lot of the cannabis growers are blaming the Hemp farmers for their 13% seeded weed lol. Sounds like things are about to get very unstable with friendships over there.

It's funny that you heard "rumors" on other sellers and jumped right on the band wagon but with Whyte one of the members who was boned was screaming it from the top of his lungs warning everyone and your calling bullshit?

Show me about Whyte? Scammie's rumors have come to fruition over and over, she even went after hybrid for fucks sake.

Yeah, rogue valley got tons hemp crop just rotting away supposedly. Wet months, love to hear how organic outdoor Farmers are getting away with no chem fungicide in Oregon? Lies imo

So your sayin I havent missed much? How'd that end up for hybrid? Guessing stephens light ended up being the better full run light. My highlights boards just hit customs so I'll be havin my head down workin with those. When is the next party cup?

I was looking into growing hemp and looked like the money is growing seed for crops. I was curious how they make sure the hemp isn't contaminated with a thc strain that somebody has thrown out somewhere to grow. Because out here I'm sure people put out seeds or seedlings along creeks or what not and I don't know if they would go back to check for males or hermies before it was time to harvest them

Why'd he run then?
That's messed up

I missed it too, but scammie started her same bullshit when results didn't favor her inferior product. Yes, hlg produced a better outcome to no one's surprise....... More output.

I need to practice before any more party cup comps :-P

Many members have left recently? So what

Show me something

I don't know if I would draw that as a solid conclusion. HydroGrow Clearly blew HLG out of the water on vegetative growth. HLG had the typical bonsai led nutrient roller coaster issues but finished with denser buds.
So for those who are actually paying attention I would say neither one lived up to the status quo and in reality the truth to all of this is that the ideal spectrum most likely lies somewhere in the middle :peace:

hey, didnt really read through much of this, but just set my timber cob light up in a tiny 2x2x4 tent. Just mixed up and refreshed some of my soil and planted some kale seeds. I prefer eating kale over lettuce so went that route. I do have some lettuce seeds i think that I could get started if you wanna see it. Really just want to get some experience in with this homemade soil and the lights. Not in the right situation to grow some weed, but can't hurt to try some things out.

At the moment, not really sure exactly what watts the light is at. Its a 2vl timber grow light cob set up that I have dimmed all the way down and attached as high as it can go in the tent. I plan on getting a cheap kill a watt meter and see what it says. Plants are like 5-6 days from sprout. I'll get some pictures up sometime if you're curious about it at all. Also, how are you growing your lettuce, what method?

Would definitely love to see your progress. There is more to the life than just weed - plant people get it.
The light side by sides I ran were in NFT. Currently I am growing my lettuce in straight Perlite. There are many ways to do it and soil should work well also. I just have always favored hydro for the growth rates and control :peace:

nice, I will keep you updated with these. I have really only grown in soil so don't know much about other methods, but your lettuce looks good. I had some kales going in this soil a while back and they did pretty good. kept harvesting same plants, multiple plants in each pot though, for a couple months.

These were the old ones from a while back.

100 agreed with spectrum being somewhere in the middle.
Although i continue to have success with the Elite 96's as for plant health or lacking common defficencies i seam to struggle with. Which is weird but its true. Maybe the smaller light points? Plant under it now receives over 2000 umols in places with no negative effects. Idk?!
