Question about where to dry

Nearing my first harvest and I have two plants in week 12 flower in my tent. I had planned to chop them both then hang and dry in the same tent with the carbon filter to mitigate the smell. Unfortunately now one plant looks like it will ripen before the other by maybe two weeks.

I have an attic, day temps around 40-60F and night can be 20-40F. Humidity can get high 80s at night and 30s during the day. Not sure if that would make it a bad choice or not.

Any ideas?

It is but with the temperature fluctuations it kinda evens out. Just circulate the air as much as possible

People make life hard by trying to dry in imperfect places - whats wrong with hang drying in a room in your house thats at human habitable levels and gets air exchange like peeps walking through, open doors/windows now and again etc.

What happens when you dry is moisture leaves the bud and diffuses into the room, as long as this can leave the room and fresh come in then thats all you need.

Plants like what we like for growing and drying s'why indoor growing works so well in our rooms we inhabit. As soon as you start enclosing bud with fans and dehumidifiers humidifiers heaters etc etc its not gona naturally dry and strength and flavour suffer - you might get lucky though who knows but the other way is pretty much a no fail no brainer

You want advice on drying in 20f.... My advice is as above still.

If you cant insulate heat and exchange air with the rest of your house i just would avoid the attic.

Others, especially around the whole led craze, dreamt up a whole load stuff and would be more likely to advise on such crazy ideas

Attics ( to me ) seem sketchy anyways because of particulate environment - ( insulation / dust / rat shit / asbestos / bird shit ( mites ) ...

Look into DIY cardboard box drying chambers.
A large “ wardrobe “ box can be had from a moving place ... and with some twine to hang stems.

Or even brown bag ( cut buds ) as this method allows slower dry and light control. Brown paper bag ( grocery size ) will breath - this is a method many still use. You could toss a hygrometer in with buds to monitor. And rolling the bag time to time reduces clumping .

Check it once or twice a day, then when it feels dryish on outside put it in plastic bin bag or bucket with lid.
Take sealed bucket lid off after several hours, feel the buds for moisture.
The buds will re moisturise evenly from the inside to outside in bucket. If the buds are still too moist put them back in growroom to continue drying a bit more and repeat.
If you accidentally over dry them you can dehydrate them by soaking a few sheets of kitchen roll in water, wring them out so theyre evenly damp and place them between buds in bucket and put lid on for a several hours with lid on.

As @Kingrow1 sez, us led growers is quite crazy in our ideas...... lol

Im blackmarket and learnt the trade as well as growing. More small plants staggered will reduce the total amount of bud you have drying at any one time and reduce smell - i can hide smaller smells easier.

What you might be able to do is build a little frame and then throw some plastic sheeting up over it, add a door and shelves or hooks inside to hang the buds on/from, then just add a vent hole and filter to the bottom, same on the top so that air flows through, then just find something like a heat mat or a ceramic reptile bulb to release some gentle heat into the drying chamber/area, might even get by with an 25-60 watt incandescent for some gentle heat IR, if you've got a small fan could be ran on low speed, that's all that really matters, you don't really need whooshing air swirling around your buds, just decent air exchange is all thats necessary.

I'm not one to believe that buds should be dried in an open air environment, why would anyone keep their plants in a safe and sterile environment the whole time while growing, and then at harvest time just allow the plants to be placed in an open environment exposed to the elements, dust, pests, debris, fibers, spores etc..... I don't see any real thought out logic in doing that, not really how I advise anyone to treat their hard earned medicine that they grew for themselves.

But yeah if it was me, I'd build a temporary drying tent, and design it in a way that it could folded and be able to put the tent up after a week or 2 when most of the drying is complete, then when each harvest comes around just setup the tent in an area with free space and then you wouldn't have to sacrifice as much space or necessitate too much allocation to a simple drying process which would allow you to continue using that space that is being taken up when the drying process is over.

I would dry in a cardboard box if i was you

So yes, the attic is too cold and too humid and probably too dusty to dry weed. The insulation in my attic chokes me every time I go up there.

Exactly. Although I’m not worried about neighbors, good friends with the only one near. I had a detective drop by last week about an unrelated issue. Don’t want to risk smell.

I’ll look into that. I have been keeping brown paper grocery bags for this reason. Was going to put the buds in the bag then cover with a layer of shredded brown paper bag strips and repeat until full.

As I wrote, one plant is going to finish well before the other. Unless I can dry them in the tent while my lights are on for the other plant or I harvest the other plant way too early this isn’t an option. Don’t they need to be in a dry and dark environment while hanging or would the led lights not matter?

That’s exactly how I made my “tent” so I reckon I could make another yet smaller one.
The tent I have is just pvc piping with fittings made into a frame and then covered with black/white poly film. I’ll keep that in mind.
