I think their defense will rest entirely on Trump not intending to commit a crime. As in: "As President, I have the right to extort other countries for my political gain".

It's perfect. His supporters believe that statement and his defense lawyers will use the statement as evidence that Trump thought he did not intend to break the law. All he has to do is keep political opinion about removing him from office below 60% and the GOP senate will exonerate him.
