Rapid LED far-red questions

Hello all,

So I’ve been revamping my main tent, a gorilla grow 4x4. I recently ordered a new 480w QB using the LM301H & Cree xpe2 660nm diodes and putting my old lm301b board in another tent. I have been planning on getting two of the far-red initiator pucks from rapidled And running them 2 minutes before lights out and 13 minutes afterwards.

When I went to order them, I came across the emerson boards that have both deep-red and far-red, and decided to go this way instead, to help get some extra far-red supplementation during flower. I just have a couple questions about these boards.

1. are they powered separately? For example, can I have the deep-reds on the same digital timer as my QB, and then run the far-reds on a seperate timer?

2. It has an option to have an included power supply. Should I order one of these for each board? Can I use a power splitter to power both with one supply? Or is there a better way to power these based on what I am trying to accomplish?

thanks guys, I’m excited to hear what you think.

I haven't seen the webpage, but if the info states there are 2 channels on it, then the colors can be turned on independently.

This is HEAVY!!! These are the things that I would never think about, but when I cee it asked then a light comes on!!! What I really want to know is what is the purpose of the red light??? And exactly how do you know if it is working???? Dont want to mess up your thread but ceeing this made me wonder... Good luck with the build bro!!!

so the deep-red, aka photo red, 660nm light, is one of the most efficient wavelengths for photosynthesis in cannabis during flowering period. my qbs already have some 660nm diodes built in, this would just be supplemental on this wavelength.

the far-red is what I am really interested in, and I may just grab two far-red pucks and put them on my QB. Far-red wavelength is present in the sun during sunset, it regulates the state of the phytochrome in the flowers, which in layman terms, controls the plants sleep cycles. Normally, in indoor setups, it takes about 2 hours for the phytocrome to change from its active state and put the plant to sleep, when you add far-red,it triggers this change in about 15 minutes. Your plant requires 10 hours of sleep, plus usually the 2 hours to get to sleep, hence why we run 12/12 for flower. With far-red lights, since it doesn’t take as long to get to sleep, you can run 13.5/10.5 without disrupting your plants sleep cycle, in turn absorbing more energy each day. Most people I know run their far-red diodes 15 minutes a day, they set them to turn on 2 minutes before lights out, and to stay on for 13 minutes after lights out.

if nothing else, ill for sure get the far-red initiator pucks from rapidled, their Emerson boards have both the deep-red and far-red included on the board,I just don’t want to pay for all the 660nm diodes if I’m not going to be able to run them at the same schedule as my other 660nm diodes.

i did the same thing.
i have 480w of 4K QB's and 2 far red pucks in a 3x4.
my idea was the far red spike and the red spike in the qb's would qualify as the Emerson effect.
i'm not using them at end of day, they run whenever the qb's run.

@Budzbuddha runs a cheap red blurpie and he says it gets the job done... He can probably point you in the right direction... Shoot Amazon has a gang of em!!! Looks like a flying saucer with a bunch of little red lights...

1. No = Both channels get power via a single power jack. You need a separate 5 volt pwm timer to dim these supplement boards (ie Bluefish ) or use an IOT Sonoff 4 ch relay to turn off the 660nm before the far reds ( a closed relay =0% PWM and open relay =100%PWM).

2. One RapidLED 30volt power supply will drive four booster boards. Use a DC power splitter cables.
awesome this is exactly what I needed. When I consider what’s needed to make it work, on top of trying to fit two boards and my qb in my tent, i
think I would rather just go with the initiator pucks, much simpler. If I ever wanna add some more 660nm, I’ll just order the diodes and put them on a strip of aluminum myself.

thanks again!

HAHA! SUPPLEMENTAL Rgb Boards Heeeare. Getchur 3.0 umol/j, latest in technology today.
These boards have many uses so you get so muchmore then what you paid for.
Ex: -they make great light up door-matts.
-awesome X-Mass Tree lights for a big tree.
-They spin, creating quite the disco party effect.
-Comes with x3 free Strobing 200w rgb led cases so you can fool the neighborhood n start the gossip by plugging them in on your doorstep to simulate x5 cop cars in front of your house.
-oh, they will also work for supplementing plain white leds, with 75% red in the 630/660/730 range, tiny bit of 470, & if you van get the green diodes on a seperate switch then you'll have green lights to view room after lights off .
Ya, i just put way to much time into that lol!

What are your thoughts are turning the far reds on before the lights come on?

Scynce LED is having a blow out sale on their Dragon S Turbo. I just placed an order for mine the other day and am waiting patiently for it! Full control of spectrums through their "Theia" app from your phone and is 100% water proof. You could literally keep this light underwater and it would still be working. Super stoked to have this is the garden! Patented 120 degree optics so its coverage is much more even compared to other led's that are more directly over the plant.

730nm can be used two ways, as a flower initiator, or to create the Emerson effect. There wouldn’t be any benefit to using it before lights on, at least that I know of.

the Emerson effect is using 730nm in tandem with 660nm. The combined spectrum results in increased photosynthesis.

what I want to use it for, it to switch the phytocromes to their inactive state, which is done by running only 730nm after the lights go out. This is what allows you to run shorter dark cycles without depriving your plants of their needed rest. Or some people use it to provide the plant with more rest without shortening the light cycles. Once I get it up and running in a couple of my tents, I’ll Take two clones of the same plant and run one at 12/12 in flower, with added 730nm and the other at 13.5/10.5 and see which has better results.

Nice, I like that experiment. I'll be able to do the same once my dragon s turbo arrives! As of now i'm only working with the Chilled Logic Pucks V2 and the far red initiator puck of 660nm by growmau5.

I'll have the ability to tune from 0 ~ 100% on which ever channel I choose. Setting options also include 6500K, 4500K, 3000K and 660nm & 720nm red

You’ll have to run a grow log on here once you get it. I did some reading on it a few weeks back and I love the concept. Some of their advertised specs were a little wonky, but I honestly don’t think it was intentional, I think they probably just got a bit confused with some of the testing they did. There’s no denying, if this light works well, that there is value to being able to change spectrum without having to swap bulbs or lights.

Do you happen to have a decent PAR meter by chance?

Yeah most definiely, i'm hunting through Chasca (Super Silver Haze Bx2 x Chemdog Bx3) by lucky dog that might make it in time for the grow log. Otherwise ill just go through my bank and pop some more beans and get the cycle going again.

I don't have a par meter right now, I'm pretty much spent after this weeks sales. Picked up a new macbook air, the dragon s, a bunch of beans, 2 QB 96 and some amendments. What par meter do you use or recommend? Was checking some out the other day ball park 500 ish?
