what is the size of the attic? How many lights are you going to have and what wattage? Are the lights going to be air cooled? Is the Attic unfinished? Does it have a window, if so how many and what size? How many plants are you planing to grow and is it soil or hydro? Sorry for all the questions but it is very helpful to know these things.
Attics require a good bit of ventilation, they get hot in the summer and cold in the winter, the former being the hardest to deal with.

the attic is pretty big (i dont know the sq footage). i have a 1000w HPS light on 8 white widow plants. the light isnt air cooled but i should have an air cooled hood soon. no windows in the attic, just small vents on the sides. all the plants are soil!!! i think that was all your questions i hope to have an attic fan installed in the roof by the end of the week before i move the plants in there tho!!!

one thing to look out for with regards to attic growing, especially in winter, if you get frosts and or snow, its been known to melt on the certain parts of the roof where your grow is, stands out like a sore thumb :)

attic grows are tricky. I would suggest you build a room INSIDE the attic, sealed. plywood or sheetrock, just seal it with duct tape. some type of insulation would be very benefitial, if your have the time/money/inclination. a sealed room is essential for the pest problems you will have in an attic, too.

tie into an a/c duct going into one of your rooms with a 12" duct or similar (min! for a 1000w lamp I would say). this is your air in. whatever temp your house is, it will flow into that room IF you have a exhaust fan pulling air out of your grow space.

the attic is your hottest spot of the house. so you may still have a temp problem in the space. the exhaust fan must stay on continuously or the smell will move into the room you are hijacking a/c from and the temps will raise. it wont hurt the a/c of the room because you're essentially only adding a few cubic feet to the room.

i hope this helps. good luck.

attic grows are tricky.
The very trickiest.

Unless you do a well insulated room in the attic with an independent ventilation system as suggested, summer temps will simply be impossible to control. It's hard enough keeping a 1000W op in a basement cool.

A spill up in the attic can cause gyprock ceilings below to at best stain or at worst collapse.

Access to attics is already difficult- they're ancillary spaces not meant for frequent access, usually. Try it carrying buckets and buckets of water or running a garden hose up there. How will you go accessing the space on a daily basis?

access is not a problem, i have a large drop down latter to climb that is not too tall and i could easily bring watter up there. i could build a nice grow room but i just dont know how to re-route that A/C vent, what should i cut it with????

Tin snips?

Depending on your Metal thickness , if its thin then drill a couple of joining holes to start your snips off.
If thicker you might need an angle grinder. If so use eye, ears, hand and body protection as in a thick coat. and watch where your sparks go.

As for your 1000w HPS heat issue , i would try and obtain one of these badboys but obviously in your area.

Bobb, post some pics as you construct your grow-room. I'm very interested in seeing how this turns out for you.

Timber and plasterboard would be easy to construct a grow room in the attic and use a jigsaw to cut the hole in the a/c ,just make sure it has a metal cutting blade and you wear goggles, mark out the hole drill 4 holes equal distances apart on the line you have marked and then go round slowly with the jigsaw
But if you cant get the a/c up there you will have heat problems my mate is having a lot of heat problems in his and we live in the uk

jigsaw? thru aluminum a/c ducts? i don't know about that. ?

i would drill a hole to get started and you'll need tin snips to cut thru the metal. better yet, a rotary bit tool is one of the most usefull machines you can buy. accurate! mark your cuts in marker before cutting. wear gloves or you'll regret it.

ok so im thinking about using a thick fabric tent and running the a/c into it with an exhaust + inlet and outlet for an air cooled hood i got an angle grinder for the a/c so it should work lol sorry a little stoned just thought it would be a good idea, you tell me
