What the hell? HID's are not a downgrade from LED's. They might not be as efficient but they grow just as good of weed. Some of us could give a rats ass about saving a few dollars in electricity. We would rather have our money now working for us than waiting five years to recoup the cost of switching to the quality LED's that can compete with HID's. Those cheap LED's don't do it and the decent ones cost five times as much to replace a 1000 watt HID. Some of us have growing conditions where the heat from the HID is welcomed or situations where we don't want to lose the height in our growing area by having to keep an LED 18+ inches above the canopy.

I'm growing marijuana not chasing technology. You might have the latest and greatest LED and grow damn good weed but so do I and many others using HID's. I've see more crappy grows from people using LED's than I do with people using HID's. If you don't believe me then go look at the Marijuana Plant Problems section. 90% of the people posting are using LED's. That says something. Plants don't seem to like those crappy LED's. Why else would people have so many deficiencies and crappy looking plants? Good quality LED's are a different story but ridiculously overpriced.

Your condescending comment towards people growing with HID's is ridiculous. Why even make it? Why can't you just say your happy with your LED's and leave it at that? I can easily pull a pound in a 4 x 4 using a 600 watt HPS that I paid $150 for. I have some of the cheapest electricity in the country. I grow in an unheated garage during the winter so I want the heat from an HID. As my equipment dies I'll likely transition to some DIY LED's but not until then. I'm not going to be the one paying for new technology. I'll wait until the price comes down like I do with everything else. You can buy the latest cell phone or you can buy last years model which usually has all the same features but costs half as much.

Most of your posts are about LED lights. Do you even grow? Your agenda for being on this site seems to be to push LED lights and nothing else.

I love my Led lights but man, this post pretty much says all that needs saying. Hps has always been the standard and still grows absolute dank. Im willing to bet majority of ganja many people here have smoked during their lives all came from hps ops. Leds are awesome, i own some and love them but that shouldnt ever take away anything from what a good HPS fixture can do.

This post by xtsho should be part of a disclaimer for any hps vs led threads that will be created in the future. Just because you prefer one type, it dont automatically make the other types shit.

I understand being loyal to a brand or a certain type of whatever the grower is using, but i cant wrap my head around all the guys who just hate on whichever they dont own and use.

On the flip side, everyone is soooooooo concerned about the cost of running HID. I run 3kW. So, if I sell 1 oz a month...cost is covered. You can't tell me you're all smoking all these huge nugs yourself.

Hell, I've dropped over $2k in the last 6 months on my setup. 1 week after first harvest she'd already paid for herself.

All I'd like to point out is that's it's not always about saving money on electricity. The room below used to have 8x 600W HPS lamps in it and used to get very hot during summer, even with aircon. We replaced 4800W of HPS with 3200W of LED with no loss of yield. 1600W of heat was taken out of the room and now temps are very manageable in summer.

Heat is the enemy of bud quality and LEDs can reduce heat by converting more energy to light. That is one of the main reasons growers in Australia (where it is generally hot) are starting to swap over. There is nothing wrong with HPS or CMH, but LED technology has really improved in recent years and continues to get better all the time. People move with the times and that's why old growers moved from MH to HPS to CMH and now LED. Maybe one day plasma lights will be the next big thing. Who knows?

Really, it doesn't matter what you use as long as you are happy with the results. (:

You didn't answer my question. Why don't you downgrade to an even less efficient light? If it's such a good idea, why don't you do it? You're obviously just justifying what you're already doing.

A reason is because they way lights are marketed. New growers have no idea what they are doing and usually look for the "cheapest" options.

Just out of curiousity….how much heat does a hps/mh or cmh light give off? In summer I couldn't use one but winter it may be an option. I have a 4x4 tent and a 2x4. I also have a 3x8 room too.

Light makes heat too. 100% of the electricity you put into a light will end up as heat. It doesn't matter how efficient the light is. A 1000w hps puts out the same heat as a 1000w LED.

The difference is you get twice as much weed per dollar of electric bill out of the LED.

An LED gives off the same heat as a hps? So with the same lights in a 3x3 the temps will be the exact same in both tents????

Yes, because when the photons coming out of the light hit something they warm it up. A watt is a watt when it comes to heat.

HPS puts out way more infrared light than LED does, so you need to run an HPS room cooler to achieve the same leaf surface temp. That means you can run more LED in a tent before you blow your heat budget because you're aiming for 82F instead of 75F.
