seedling and clone question

hello im rookie grower and i had left some seeds in a glass of water they cracked showing a small root i planted them in soil root down about 1 inch deep. im curious how close my light should be for this stage the manufacture of my light (spectrum king mothers little helper) says to keep it 18" away for vegitative state but ive heard that seedling state should be a bit further, ive got it 24" away and after 24hours usualy i have a seed sprouting out but this time nothing, is my light too close or am i just impatient?

Also another rookie question, my friend cloned a few gelato clones off of his mother for me and they are just showing first sign of roots out of the pucks, i will put them into solo cups today but he has them at 18-6 light cycle and i was hoping to do 24hour light for first few weeks. Is it safe to take the clones out of his 18-6 light cycle and put them in my 24hour light cycle (We're expecting -15 degrees celcius (5farenheit) weather over the next week then it warms up so i want lights on 24hrs for heat issues)

No light is needed to sprout a seed. Just warmth and damp.
I usually dont bury mine that deep and have had them take as long as 5-10 days to sprout

Hopefully you have them up on something warm. The light will help keep the soil warm, but will dry it out faster.
A humidity dome will help keep the moisture in as well.

Well i have a clone dome/seedling tray and a heat mat but these are autoflower feminized seeds so they went straight into the 3gal pots they will be staying in.

I see no problem going to 24 hr lighting if you want. As for the light just go 24” and move it down if your seedlings become too tall.

One inch deep is too much, in my experience. Between cracking its shell and opening the cotyledons is a very fragile time. Damping off can happen very easily, and the longer that little thing is underground, the more likely it is to happen.

Boatguy is right no need for lights, but i understand that in your case you need to keep lights on 24 hours to keep them warm, so just keep them on at a distance that wont make the back of your hand uncomfortable even tho if you place it too close you wont hurt the seed unless it sprouts , or you can just place them some where that is always warm with no lights. you got the choice on this.

also Saboo is right, you can just wipe away some soil from the top of the seed, never over water, actually dont feed more then 50 ml of water at a time and increase your dose as plant matures.

for the clones nothing gonna happen to them at the flip from 16 to 24 so dont worry!

I’ve had more seedlings damp off when using a dome but maybe the dome was not the cause?

I've never had this "damping off" happen. Have heard about it hundreds of times, but it seems like a single name for the many different ways to kill a seedling. I have had them fall over from getting too tall, dont think that is dome related though

In my current setup, I'm running all of my seedlings and my clones under a 400W MH lamp, 24" above the pots. The tent is 76F, 60% RH at the base of the pots, and I'm on a 24/0 light cycle. I have been using a turkey baster every two days to water them with just tap water. I do not mist, nor do I use a dome.

That light is definitely overkill for those plants, and I could definitely go much higher with the lamp, but it's been working perfectly. I'd dim the light, but I have other plants in this tent that are later in the veg process.

Hey guys 1st time growing here growing in a very small space but besides that i have been doing a lot of reading about clones that suggests that the earlier into veg you take the clones improves your plants chance of producing max yeild for that particular plant.
And also alows for a shorter plant if topped early
Is this true?

Secondly i basically got scared and went ahead and snipped my two autojacks for cloning one was 3 weeks old from sprouting and the other 4. I followed all the cloining tips such as making the 45 degree slice in the stem then soak in clonex for 10-20 second then planted in rockwool. I soaked the rockwool 1st, admittedly i used my neut mix nd after i heard i should have just used water.
Was this too early to take clones?

Im just getting set up and i know i dont have everything i need yet. So far i have only spent £35 on seeds everything else i have built or already had lying around then i was lucky enough to get a free baby tent and free remo neuts from someone who no longer needed it. But all advise on things to get/do asap is welcome.

How am i doing?
How are they looking?
Did i fuck up?

I also haven't started ph testing but i know this is important and plan to start. Nd dont watch the thermostat readings the pic are usually taken during rest time and when i was setting up the tent.
