Seems a drug cocktail is in the works.

The doctors from Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok said a new approach in coronavirus treatment had improved the condition of several patients under their care, including one 70-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan who tested positive for the coronavirus for 10 days.
The drug treatment includes a mixture of anti-HIV drugs lopinavir and ritonavir, in combination with flu drug oseltamivir in large doses.
“This is not the cure, but the patient’s condition has vastly improved. From testing positive for 10 days under our care, after applying this combination of medicine the test result became negative within 48 hours,” Dr. Kriangska Atipornwanich, a lung specialist at Rajavithi, told reporters.

The BBC is saying at least 10% die.

10%! Jesus, I can understand the panic, but that's not the true mortality rate which is lower. If this is a "cold" virus, perhaps there is some cross immunity for people who get frequently, like Canadians who live inside a lot during winter and this might lessen the severity in some parts of North America. For older folks, make sure you get a pneumonia vaccine, it might help with survival if you get this bug.

Thank goodness for trump, he'll save us!

President Donald Trump on Thursday sought to assure Americans about the spread of a new coronavirus, saying it would have “a very good ending for us … that I can assure you,”

Doesn't work that way. You have to be exposed to that virus to gain resistance to it, assuming you survive. There is no vaccine for it right now. Pneumonia is a lung infection caused by several different pathogens.

Let's just hope this disease doesn't make it here before the vaccines are ready. Let's hope it doesn't mutate and defeat the new vaccine too.

But, really, this thread is more about the shitty rulers that are afflicting the Chinese people than anything else. The root problem and the one that will linger after this crisis is over is the corrupt, authoritarian government over there. I'm not a fan of Trump and his bungled self-serving trade negotiations but I was never in favor of extending trade to China. Not even when Bill Clinton expanded it. This kind of problem was so predictable. This outbreak which was made worse by the CCP's inept response is not even the worst problem they are inflicting on the world.

LOL

So, we can expect 3 billion doses to be ready tomorrow?

Great. I guess it's time to invest in the makers of those drugs. I'm glad that woman lived but that cocktail isn't an answer.

Yep, it's often bacterial and can finish off an older patient who is sick and weakened with something else, so if your over 60 a pneumonia shot is advised. If your concerned about the bug, at least cover that base. I'm not saying people wouldn't get sick, but if it's similar to a cold virus there might also be some bases covered there immunity wise, kinda like a cow pox vs smallpox ting, one immunize you against the other because the pathogens are related.

There is no shot for this disease.

yet... We'll see how bad it gets, I believe the mortality rate is around 2%, about the same as influenza, the severity of illness and ease of transmission seems to be the major concerns. I haven't been following it too closely, yet!

So stop telling us to get a shot for this disease.

Estimates are 10% BTW. We really don't know because China's government is not forthcoming with accurate information. They are turning people away from hospitals and people are dying at home in the middle of what is effectively a 7-24 curfew. 2%? 10%? For all we know, these miss the mark on the low end because mortality to this disease cannot now be tracked.

Yes, people who are susceptible to viral pneumonia might benefit from a vaccination and they should talk to their doctor about getting one. Of course, right wing disinformation about vaccines defeats even this good advice.

As they say, this is all just a scam by the same people who ginned up the fake human caused global warming scam. (that was sarcasm in case one needs to be told)

So far a 2% mortality rate, but it's early and has yet to be fully determined, more data is required at this point.

If in China a billion people quickly became infected with this virus and 2% died that's a lot of bodies at one time, 20 million more or less. If the mortality rate was 10% with a billion people (1.4 billion in China) a 100 million could persh in within a few months, just in China. Aside from the grief it would be a logistical and public health nightmare, with world travel by plane it would be a global pandemic in no time at all.

Yes your right, but what’s your point really? That it’s bad and could get way worse? Also your right about the pneumonia shot being a good thing for people over 60, and under 60 if you have preexisting conditions, it’s free here btw. But to run out and get it, thinking it gives you a leg up with this is unhelpful. But fill your boots if you think it will. What I want to know is why Canada hasn’t, as of yet closed it’s borders to China? And why are we negotiating the return of Canadians when in fact other countries are doing it now. The Chinese Government is basically getting us to suck their virus infected balls. The most pressing need now is to slow it down, sure as hell won’t contain it, until there is a viable vaccine. The fucking WHO is looking very much inept if not guilty of covering up this shit at this point IMO.

LOL..... China doesnt respect weakness.......Trudeau is the picture boy.
He actually sucked Trumps (I would say balls but I’m sure there withered up raisins) cheeseburger smeared asshole. Now he has to suck Chinese balls to keep our economy from tanking. China has gone unchecked for years and now they basically can make or break a countries economy. This thing is going to have far reaching consequences for the world as we know it re the economy. If it gets bad just the missed productivity alone will be devastating.

Was reading predicted financial effects by country in Financial Times (paywall so I won't post link). China represents 30% of worldwide consumer spending, so changes in growth there ripple across the globe. A 1% decrease in GDP growth in China will result in 6% decrease of GDP growth in Canada. These are changes in growth not overall GDP. China gets a cold, Canada gets the flu. It looks as if China's problems are triggering a worldwide recession.
