Don't be afraid to bend those suckers as far over as possible, and also train secondary growth towards the light.
Also when you bend them over, you will be able to bring the light back down on them, giving more of the plant stronger light, which will give a better yield.
If you bend them from the beginning, you will greatly increase your yield, and maximize light penetration over a larger area of the plant, and can also reduce veg time.
Any light be it LED/HID has a maximum penetration ability, and when grown like a forsythia bush will maximize light to the entire plant, and lateral height wont be as much of a limitation.
I also like to grow plants that stretch a lot after inducing flowering, and use that to my advantage with less veg time.
I veg with both a 1000w Hortilux HPS, and Gavita 1700e. Both in 4 x 4 areas. Temps 77f-82f, and all the fresh air possible. I like my plants to be slightly moving 24 hours a day, even when lights out. They actually use Oxygen at lights out vs C02. I also shake them when in veg, like theyve been in a small wind storm. I do this most every day. Not to violently, but they know they have been shaken.
You can also greatly slow the growing tip by bending on it everyday, and when you want it to resume forward growth, leave it alone, and to keep it growing horizontally, bend/tie it around 25% down from the growing tip vs mucking with the tip.
Shaking, and having a small breeze going all the time will make the stems as strong as possible, though they still may need support in budding. Really strong light also builds strong stems/stalks.
