Yeah autos are genetic retards anyways. Can't get high THC numbers with them.

I respect your photoperiod knowledge, but with respect to Autos...you are ignorant of how the times have changed...

Consider the impact of GG4 on a breeding program, and how few generations it takes to make a significant impact on THC content when integrated into a new strain..let say 3-5 to be very conservative.

Auto's have been actively bred for well over 30 years...thus, the amount of ruderalis in the genes is getting damn near zero, with the exception of the light trigger...

The argument being much like many would argue with Landrace vs Hybrids..

I totally understand the place for photo's from a commercial breeders standpoint and ability to consistently replicate a product, but for those look at a hard and fast approach, or are in an outdoor environment with a limited Growing window..you can still regularly pump Cannabis Auto's with THC in the mid 20's...

I'm thinking of buying an analyzer. There's a company called mydx that sells one but its 1000 dollars. It'd be nice to be able to test the stuff I produce, but I'd also like to be able to test the dispensaries around here. The one in my town is selling eighths of flower for 25. I was psyched when I first saw it, because the dispensaries in Mass get 60/eighth. So I just moved to ME and see 25 bucks and I nearly fell over. Then I bought some and smoked it. Grape Godess - 25% thc - indica dominant. I woulda got higher if I smoked oregano. 25% THC my ass.

But if I had an analyzer I would test the autos in my tent and compare it to the breeders THC estimate which is 24%. I can tell you even without a way to get accurate number there's no way these autos are gonna beak 20% at the rate there going. But I can't say if it an inherent auto thing or a something I did wrong thing.

I haven't seen an auto test in the 30's, that I do know

That's true at the moment, at least from my observations, that autos don't meet the potency levels of an equivalent photo. I remember when autos were just starting to become a thing, and breeders were beginning to push them which was when I started to get into growing in about 2011 maybe? Back then the general opinion was they were garbage. They were pretty much the domain of first time growers who grew them once and then went to photos after that. Sort of like training wheels for weed. They've come a long way since then in just nine years, now the best autos are only a gnats dick below the best photos on the quality scale and still a few rungs down the ladder potency wise. I'll tell you one thing for sure though, it's only taken me three generations of selective breeding to vastly improve my mendo mass white widow hybrid and I'm just one dude growing at home. Give the industry another nine years and I reckon hardly anyone will be talking about photos (although there is one dude on this forum who still thinks HPS beats LED any day of the week, so, you know.)

Holy crap guys, I just spent basically the whole day researching THC analyzers. I know that's a little off topic from the OP but as I'm the original poster, I'm taking the liberty. Besides we were talking about thc levels and testing earlier, so...

Anyway the THC testing world is a f-ing mess. You got companies like MyDX scamming the HELL out of people. 1000 dollars for a plastic camera attachment and an app. Tcheck looks sketchy too. Then I watched a whole thing on corruption in the retail cannabis world where growers and labs are in cahootz with each other to drive up THC content in dispensary weed. What a nightmare.

Hey I grow 1000W HPS!!!. I don't get into a debate over led vs hid anymore because its such a subjective thing. Yeah, yeah par levels and gram per watt ratios, I know. But I live in Maine. Not Portland, which is basically a suburb of Boston, but 7 hours past east bum fuck. And it is cold here. Pretty much all the time. I need to keep my tent between 65-70-80 degrees and it would cost me a small fortune to heat my house to the temp my tent needed. Fortunately my 1000w hps is like having a small sun in a 5 x 5 tent. I actually open my windows from time to time because the temps start creeping into the 85+ range. So a good blast of air around 25 degrees below zero really does the trick. Basically though, I just didn't have the extra cash for the led. For a 5 x 5 I had my eye on the spider farmer SF4000. So my hid does things an led could never do, but all in all, I'd concede that the spider farmer or similar setup would be better in the long run (lower operating costs, cheaper over the long run, more efficient, higher yields).

Interesting thread ... lots of subjective venting and some actual analysis :)
There's nothing wrong with autos if the breeders don't screw up a seed run. Personally, I like Fast Buds for consistency, but when Mephisto doesn't do something odd, they have some goods genetics. I've pulled 30+ zs off 4 Alien vs Triangle plants in 4 gal hempy buckets in a 5x5 under a Spydr I @ 18/6 with Greenleaf Nutrients Mega Crop, Sweet Candy, and Bud Explosion. I topped them once at around 3-4 weeks. I think they needed an extra week beyond the 10-11 weeks they advertise, but that's not the end of the world. That said I had another harvest with an 800w DIY COB fixture and Jack's 321 that was no where near as productive.
As for cloning, no go on autos. If you take a cutting at 4 weeks on a 10 week auto, you'll get small 6 week plants ... really.
I have no particular bias photo or auto. I grow both but try to stick with established breeders for either. Since I'm sure someone will say prove it sooo ... here's a recent granddaddy purple grow in the same 5x5. It actually ran about 10 days past the "standard" harvest

I miss my landrace Shiva and I think that with autos we will miss photos someday and thats a terrible thing for commercial growers.
Someone posted earlier about how with autos you have to keep going back to buy seeds. Of course, if you have the knowledge you can produce your own seeds like @TheGreatSouthern . But that'd be some sinister shit if there was a conspiracy to push autos over photos for the financial gain.

The only 30 I've ever seen was on some gorilla glue from a dispensary in Mass. I couldn't tell you auto or photo but I would assume photo since its a commercial operation. That being said, what I just watched about the players in the cannabis industry (growers/sellers/labs) and the corruption that exists where THC contents are negotiable and can go up if you pay the lab enough money. So the 30 I saw could have been a 22 for all I know.

One more thing I will say about THC content. I got some super lemon haze from the dispensary that was labled at 29%. I smoked and smoked and it never got me even a little high. Then I've tried some strains at 14-15% and been knocked on my ass. So THC level is really just a number. At least in my opinion.

IDK if you saw the pics of my tent in the beginning of this post, but I've got four plants that should look like your second photo. They are real "gappy" the way the colas are coming together. Yours has a relatively symmetrical cola. Somehow I doubt mine will fill in and start dumping resin all in a week or two (possibly three based on what renfro said).

Spray one branch with colloidal silver every day for 2 weeks starting in the first week of flower and that's it. That is literally all you do to produce enough feminized pollen to seed a whole room full of plants and produce thousands of feminized seeds. From 4 plants I get about 7000 seeds, enough for a home grower to grow for years. Easier than looking after mother's and taking clones imo. There probably, or rather undoubtedly is an agenda by seed banks to sell autos. Most people would just keep buying more.

Fair enough brother. I light up a couple of my old 600hps units in the coldest months too. Although, this winter I'm going to burn a bit of propane instead for the heat and the co2
