A lot of people don’t realize that they really should be using a 20A timer. The regular ones are really meant more for table lamps.

Most circuits that people use for home growing are only 15A. A 20A timer should have a different electrical pin out than a 15A or less unit, the neutral prong should be "T" shaped. This prevents someone from plugging 20A devices into a 15A circuit. Most timers are rated for 10-12A from what I've found. A 1000W HID is 8.33A.

I've used the same mechanical timers I started indoor growing with almost eight years ago. I only use HID lamps (400W, 600W and 1000W). I've never, ever had a mechanical timer fail. $15 from Home Hardware if I remember correctly.

I suspect that might be a possibility if you bought the timer at the dollar store, but I digress...

Oh no they were 10$ or more timers from three different hardware stores.... All the "best ones" the store carried. I think quality control and overall build quality of timers at the hardware store has gone way down. As far as i can tell you have to buy a full blown lighting controller these days.

I have a timer, I’m just really worried about light leaks in general. I’m pretty confident in what I know. Just now I’m putting it to the test. Mainly went with autos because the plant from what I hear is typically smaller in stature. I gots bigger tent now so I’ll try some photos.

You can sprout photos at 12/12 and they will grow smaller than almost any auto.

Odd. Honestly, you're the first person I've ever heard say they burnt out a decent mechanical timer, let alone three.

I'd have taken them back. They should be electrically certified for a specific rating. If they are burning up while being under-utilized, that's a huge problem.

Perhaps your lamp has a short, causing excessive current draw?

My mistake...I just looked up the one I used and remembered why I got it. What I should have said is a lot of people get the ungrounded timers and most of those are less than 15A. I’ve never had issues with the timers that have a grounded socket.

Light leaks aren’t as big of an issue as people make them sound. I think most people who claim light leak issues only claim them because they have another issue they haven’t figured out. If you can stand in the closed up tent, and not see bright light coming in, then you won’t have any issues.

I already did.

Just get some feminized photoperiod seeds. They are no more challenging than an auto. Veg for awhile and then switch the timer to 12/12 for flower. I'd suggest something like an OG Kush, White Russian, or some other easy to grow high yielding hybrid. Don't chase the latest strain. Go with a tried and true easy to grow strain.

Dont worry about it man its your thread, steer it as you please and dont be afraid about upsetting peoples feelings. My 2 cents on best auto strain for you- I have most my experience with Fast Buds genetics. So far i have found most their thc claims to be bullshit. If its a really purple strain, it will be garbage smoke. Everything else is mediocre. However, their Gelato is some absolute FIRE. The Smoothie is pretty good too, but the Gelato... Makes me so wet thinking about it.

But all around, Im going to give you the words of encouragement I wish someone had given me; Grow photos. Autos are not better in any way. They have come a long way in the last decade but photos will always be better and are just as easy to grow.

Agree on some photo seeds .. grab the basic cuts to start and play with. Too easy to fuck up an auto for beginners. Look at gg4 / afghani kush / blue dream / trainwreck / skunk 1 / durban poison.
These are not some stupid cookie mix or some other bullshit boutique strains. With a few grows under your belt with these , you can start slinging pollen on any of them.

Besides photo grows allow you to start learning about training , canopy management, topping , etc.
I recommend starting with simple soil grows to start.

Remember its just a fucking plant. If you grow a tomato you can grow weed.
