World Of Hempy

Hi Guys! I posted this in the hydro section, but I’m thinking this might be a better place to ask.

First timer grower. I have decided to start with the hempy method. I have combed through the forums and Google search, but given the fact that so many variables can affect and alter information, I thought it might be wiser to ask you guys directly.

I am looking for help regarding a feeding schedule and ratios for each growth stage using GH Flora Trio. It’s what I have on hand, but if you guys are adamant about another line, I’m open to ordering something different. Also, what additives (if any) should I purchase and when to use them? I also have cal mag on hand for future rdwc once I am more experienced.

When to start feeding with nutes? I’ve read a lot of conflicting info on this! Water for first couple of weeks, water until 2nd set of leaves emerge, or reduced feed as soon as the seed sprouts?

I will be using 5 gallon hempy buckets with 3:1 perlite/vermiculite. I also have hydroton that I was considering placing over the top of the perlite to help prevent algae.

Growing in a 4x4 tent with 2 leds rated at 240w each with cree. I would also appreciate any suggestions for additional lighting in flower if needed! Additionally, I have a 2 bulb t5. I am unsure whether to use it for seedlings or just put them under one 240w while they’re little and decrease the distance from the light gradually

I am starting with a bag seed and a blue dream auto. Considering adding a candy kush express a couple weeks after the auto starts so it can veg while the auto finishes with 18/6. I tried to match heights and flower times as closely as possible when choosing. Any corrections or suggestions on that are also welcome!

So, to recap since I tend to write too much... lol... I’m looking for a feeding schedule and ratios for seedlings, veg, and flower using GH trio. Any suggestions for supplements and/or additives. And also, what ppm am I aiming for for each stage? Do I feed each time or alternate with pHed water?

If you guys could direct me to any good grow journals using 5 gallon hempies with leds, that would be great. I’m unsure how much things vary based on tent size, lighting, and growing medium (such as my chosen mix versus perlite/coco etc) and I haven’t had any luck finding a journal that has my same set up.

Also, I’m having a difficult time with EC. My meter reads 91 us/mc for my tap water, yet I’ve only seen references to EC readings that are low decimals (such as 0.1 etc). What am I doing wrong? Is there a conversion method? Or do I just focus on ppm and not worry with ec? Link below to my meter if that helps.

Digital TDS-Meter, Accurate and Reliable, HoneForest TDS, EC & Temp Meter 3 in 1, 0-9990ppm, Ideal Water-Tester-PPM-Meter(Green) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CWDVJY9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_E4eMEb8RFFPAT

One last thing that I’m wondering about...
I’ve seen references to using 10 gallon buckets. I’m aiming to grow 2ish plants each grow under scrog. Photos for scrog, not the auto.
Should I use 10 gallon instead of 5 gallon for better yields?
Lmk if I need to provide any other info!
Many thanks!

5 gal is plenty.
i believe your water EC is 0.091 which is really good.

if you want easy nute schedule, google Lucas formula. the 1:2 ratio of micro/bloom is important. dont' do what it says as far as starting out at 8/16. start off at 1/2, then 2/4 then 3/6 as the plants can handle it.

i would get a bottle of cal/mg to keep on hand

hempys are fun and pretty easy.
the only hard part is when the plants are small and dont' have any roots to the bottom. you'll need to top feed a few times a day to keep them going.

This is a hydroponic grow style so they get the nutrients from the water you pour down the roots. You have to provide the nutrients from the get-go there is not much to buffer as soil mediums provides.

Try 4 to 1, the vermiculite will allow you to water less frequently but you don't need a whole lot.

T5 would be easier on them. The 240w led could burn them to a crisp if its to close and they are too young.

This will get the job done with Cal-mag added in. I first started with these same nutrients. I used the back of the bottle to base my mixes with and it worked ok. When they are young I did go half the suggested amounts just to be safe. After week 2 or so you can add what they suggest for your current growth stages. Personally I moved to MegaCrop and ditch all of the bottles. It's pretty close to one scoop, and mix then pour.

Hempy folks, got a ? for you guys/girls:

Going to do 2 tomato plants in an outdoor g'house this summer in hempys, the other 4 take up the soil part of the g'house.

Has anybody tried drilling the drain hole at 4" up from the bottom? i've done tomato hempys a few years ago but they got so big i had to water 2x day.
I'm sure it's been done, doesnt' seem like it could be bad at all, right?

You'll be fine.
My buckets are cut @ 2", but the drain line out of the tent is about 4.5" off the ground. About the same to raise up into the condensate pump also. So effectively, my drain is @ 4.5" twice :)

Added bonus, it allows all the plants to "share" runoff inside the tent with those who are drinking more than others.

that's what i thought as well. i think the 4" of res will let me water them once a day instead of twice like before. thanks.

What # of perlite is ideal for final container and what size is ideal for solo cup pre transplant?

I am not sure if I should use #3 or #4 for my 5 gallon and what size I should use for my solo cup?

Not sure the size, but I use the stuff they sell @ Lowes/Walmart.
Nothing fancy, but no problems either.
Whatever you get, just make sure to rinse it off really well before you use it. All of it comes pretty dusty.

I grow with the smaller stuff just like smoke. I do know a couple growers who rave about the #3. The plants look great using either.

what size buckets would you recommend, 4 plants, in a 4 x 4, vegging for 8 weeks, indicas
The biggest I go is 3-gallon buckets. I know you can get huge plants in 5 gallons. I don't try and veg them out in the bigger containers though. The roots have to get to the bottom reservoir before they don't need daily attention. The taller the bucket the longer that takes. For me, I veg them up in solo cups for a month and then go into the 3 gallons until they are the size I want to flower them at.

would a 2 gallon bucket take me all the way through flower?

EDIT: after a month in a solo
EDIT EDIT: Can't find 3 gallon buckets. 2 gallon, 3.5, 5 seem common.

In my current setup I use 1.75 gal wastebaskets from the dollar store. My best out of it so far was 80 grams dry. I am afraid to use anything bigger because hempy can grow monsters in little pots and space is limited.
