Weed bust in the 70's
I booked a ski vacation to Whistler Blackcomb, late 90's, I was held in customs for hours, had to pay $500 and let in for my 10 day stay. I was informed that if I wanted to return Id need a "Ministers Permit"
I mean, WTF ? eh....

My wife got busted in the mid-80s for possession in Texas. She's now a dual-US/Canada citizen. If I can get her through...

I guy I worked with down in SC, who has dual citizenship, was telling me he wanted to move back to Canada for good, but they won't permit his wife to become a citizen because she got bagged for shoplifting when she was 17...and she's in her 50s currently.

It depends on the border agent actually. A criminal charge is a criminal charge, but they do have the ability to consider things individually as well.

A cannabis possession charge will likely be overlooked, but if the agent is having a bad day, they might find another reason to compound the previous conviction and deny entry.

Also, with the US and its aggressiveness against non-US folk, Canadian border agents may be aggressive to US-citizens on a personal level due to perception.

It's all a game. I cross the border dozens of times per year, land and air (and water!) and have seen strange and unpredictable things.

I suspect exaggeration there. Permanent immigration is a totally different beast than just visiting, and there are numerous opportunities with the application to justify away things like a 30 year old theft charge.

My wife has a flag for trying to import a 38 (by accident). On another occasion, they took away a pen-sized canister of mace. Both before she got her Permanent Residency.

Yea, the travel agent I was using said she had never had anything like that happen in the 20+ yrs she had been booking trips to there.
It was fucked for the 5 or so hrs spent @ the airport/customs, but the next 10 days skiing made up for it.
I have no desire to go back really, I had a great time, but I got Mammoth..

Yeah, I was surprised when he told me that. I haven't been to Canada since I was a kid in the 80s, but we used to drive from MA to New Brunswick every year when I was a kid and it didn't even seem like we were leaving the US back then.

There are a couple of places in NB where I'd visit friends on my way through from Toronto to Cape Breton Island every year. They were on a small lake. This side, Canada, the other, US.

It was trivial for us to travel back and forth between countries several times per day by rowing our little boat. Booze always has been cheaper in the US, so we'd hit that side for liquor, and this side for peace of mind ;)

I've taken this thread far away from its intended purpose though. Sorry OP!
