In any case, 40 ppm water should be completely fine. The big variable is whose nutes you are using and how you’re using them.

You probably have pinholes in your RO cartridge. If you bought it new, invoke the warranty. Otherwise plan to replace it soon.

The ppm reading could be entirely sensor error. 30ppm might as well be 0. I was using tap with 350ppm and had all sorts of problems. I just started using RO and usually measure 30ppm on it.

You should make sure to consider adding CaMg to the RO water. I've been adding it at 1tsp per gallon to register ~140 ppm from the 30ppm base reading. I never went without it so they may not have developed deficiencies but they are lush and thriving.

If your tap was as bad as this persons, then most RO filters wont get that down to 0 id say your result would be about expected if your starting point is about the same.
you will be fine with that water and will likely end up having to add cal and mag back into it. I need both in my 50ppm tap water

My tap is 170 - 180 PPM and I use it now, stopped using the RO filter, dropped the calmag, just a little epsom and my base nutes. Plants are super happy and I don't have to replace filters anymore and my water bill is 1/3 of what it was when I used RO.

MAke sure your filter doesn't have a alkali mineralization cartridge as a post filter, it will add crap into the water.
