I beg to differ. The US is currently the oldest working democracy. Seriously, look it up. And it is a Republic, yes, but a democratic republic. The word republic merely describes the representative system of the democracy.
America claims lots of things. Check out that link. And u did say the oldest firstly and then just changed it to oldest working..
Check out the link and have a read. its interesting

No link. You're right, I was implying and should have been more clear. The oldest working democracy in a country. Iceland would be older, but they only got independence from Denmark in 1944. Several other groups of people, but without a country. And Obviously the oldest democracy ever is waaaaay before our modern countries even existed.

Its a confusing question to as it depends on what your view of what a democracy is as well. Id argue that having electoral colleges decide who wins an election rather than the % of votes is not a true democracy for eg. We also look on it in a modern way as well and forget about the old world.
Link was in the prev comment- Its a fun read, https://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,,-80426,00.html
Its an interesting discussion but kind of a rabbit hole.

Your not the oldest democracy in the world (and America is a Republic). Its to young and Democracy was invented before America was invaded by the whites. Interesting read- https://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,,-80426,00.html

Countries in turmoil are a great breeding ground for dictators.
Oh, that link. Isle of Man, yes, but that isnt a country. As for Britain in 1707, I admit I dont know enough british history to speak intelligently on the subject. Does GB not have a functioning monarchy? When did the monarchy become just a title and not a system of rule? 1707, I'm assuming? If so, maybe you're right. I'll have to do more reading. As Bob said, I'm a bit biased, and have a masters degree in american history education, so I am well aware that I may have blind spots. Not all americans are know-it-all assholes...or arseholes. :bigjoint:

Anyone who stands in defense of this "man" after he is defeated in an election deserves to be there. We are the oldest democracy in the world, and I'd like to keep it that way. Defying the will of the voters tops my list of inexcusable actions. I'm no chest thumping, love-it-or-leave-it Republican (and that's an understatement,) but as imperfect as our country is, I'll be damned if it ends up like any of the places trump seems to love.
It might be too late.

BTW, I think the Greeks beat you to the democracy thing. :D
