Is Mainlining worth it?

when you are getting 40%-50% more yield, with less larf? Yes it seems silly.
I did two plants this yr in a 5 gallon bucket (light dep) with a 5 week veg.
got 4.5oz off the mainlined
Got 2.75oz the old method.

did that to show a friend who is learning
That's awesome representation of the benefits of mainlining. I will update this thread on how mine do. Only cut for 4 main lines because I'm packing them in tight

@ganga gurl420 do you happen to have a photo of that grow? I'd like to see their 5 week size when you flipped to flower for my own comparison.

Sadly I didn't grab any pics of the end because they got sun bleaching and looked kinda bad. I hardened them off for a week but I guess I didn't go long enough.

I'd have to ask if they were both cut from the same mother, otherwise can't argue with that. Although I'm unsure what you mean by old method?.

Actually their might be some argument in the light dep part. I tend to think that if you cut away up to 80% of foliage indoor the initial lower quality light to leaf ratio may complicate things in the stunting department. Even if mainlining is superior outdoor, as you've evidently found.

If you see my photo above, 18 are from seed and main lined. Been 4 weeks. So those are about the size when you flipped to flower? I was gonna let them veg until they were another 20" taller....

Well it's hard to compare. I had 8 colas each and had them in the sun not indoors. You will have massive buds if you let them go a bit longer for sure!!!

I don't use clones. Same strain though.
The variance from seed to seed could literally be the difference you had, give or take (or maybe not ofc). I'd have been much happier to concede if they were from the same plant. Maybe you should try that side by side to know for sure yourself, but do share with me if you do ;p. It's a interesting technique.

Yes I see you grow outdoor which is why I am making the comparisons to indoor, as that's what the OP is doing. It may be just that, the typical lights/spectrums people use, the potential lower levels of co2 etc etc may enhance the stunting of initial low leaf mass of this technique indoor with a short veg time. Or sure, maybe it's nothing else but grower error (no offense OP).

My theory is the nute uptake is more evenly distributed. Tho nugbuckets explains it better. His technique was actually created for indoors.
You should give it a go with one plant sometime and try it out.

Of course there are some reasons it would not do better...
Slow growing plant
Using shop lights or even t5s will not pull the same weight.

You do need a decent set up to make it work for sure.

Do you like the grow bags? I grow organic, and was going to get some 15 gal fabric lots but those bags are cheap.
Ehh they're fine. Super cheap. Another guy on this forum said get Walmart fabric shopping bags. Also at northern grow lights he has fabric pots for an insane price.

I grow in a 2x4x5 space and Mainlining has helped me a ton. I used to scrog by just topping for 4 mains and growing lots of branches. And that works great but it can be a mess and many branches turn out to be just small colas or even single buds. With mainlining it ensures that all
Of those branches turn into something worth a damn. I also veg plants while I flower in a separate tent so taking time to veg plants for a long time is no prob!

Clones are not main lined.
Sure they are. Nugbuckets even had a section on using clones...just a little trickier due to alternate branching.

I actually think the Uncle Ben 4 cola topping method is just as good.

The whole manifold idea is that each cola gets treated equally by the plant....and they will all be equal. Just not sure how important that is...

Uncle Ben's 4 colas method with a tomato cage is the way to go, I tried both with all other aspects being equal. Mainlining takes too long to veg, I guess it's fine in an outdoor grow where plant growth is mostly limited by pot size. Sure the stems look cool but in my case that I grow like, 16 plants in 4 months cycles, not worth the headache. Also NOT good to have horizontal stems, fucks up vascular system.

Absolutely correct.
Unless your into Bonsai & like pretty plants, mainlining will NEVER produce a lot of bud.
Looks cool, but I grow for profit & need as much bud as I can get off a plant & that ain't happening with a mainlined plant.
Slows down finish by weeks also.
So, all you that are thinking about it, don't waste the seed or your time :)

I agree with @ganga gurl420. Mainlining, or manifolding as I call it, can produce a lot of bud. Here's a clone only Green Crack I took last week. This is 2 1/2 weeks since flip. I've gotten 1/2# off some plants indoors. And some people get even more.

I just found it not worth the time if you have the head room to let them grow.
I tried it twice & and it turned an 8 week plant into a 10 week plant which was not good,
I rarely touch a plant now, I just let them grow.
Maybe a Sativa I will top due too height restrictions indoors, but otherwise I leave them alone.
Nice looking plant by the way, good work & enjoy the fruits of you labor :)

Ya, it adds a little extra time, but I've been doing the perpetual thing so I have the time. I have a tent I veg in while others flower, so I have at least a couple months to veg them. I don't always manifold them though. Sometimes I don't do shit. Usually I just top and do some LST, but I've been getting lazy lately.

I grow for a living so time is everything.
The only slow thing I do is I will veg for 5 weeks instead of 4, which I found to be needed for a good plant
I grow mostly Sativa which average 10 weeks minimum (my customers prefer them) so I have no time to waste.
I grow perpetual also, cycling 27 plants in a RDWC system in 3 rooms for bloom & 1 for veg.
Pain in the ass sometimes but I just love growing :)
