I put them upside down, I agree too small a cup or too long a cup you may dwarf it.
The cup does a few things:
1. no transplanting
2. root restriction seems to make stronger roots?
3. Watering:
a. less water needed, just water the cup first.
b. You wont nasty up the whole pot with stagnant water.
c. you can give consistent small watering to the cup.
4. Protects stem from ferts, you can now safely top feed and dig in around it.
Eventually the roots will reach the top unless you went too big.
