The Bad, and the Ugly

Yellowing, discoloration, rusty patch on the leaves of the two tallest girls. All plants, even the ones furthest from light, show some yellow though.

Dehumidifier tearing up this leaf. There was another that was much worse that got clipped off earlier today (not pictured)

Not sure what caused this leaf the get that chewed-up look. It happened when it was new-growth, but it's since recovered and got pretty big.

Apr 28-29

Undertook the annoying task of moving the light. I'm glad I did, though. Things look much better in the tent.
It had to be done, once I awoke to find Mango Sherb #1 had grown OVER the top of the light! So much for worrying about her top recovering!
Set up a training line along one side of the tent to pull some of her branches away from collision with the other girls.
I also swapped the locations of a few girls (yet again). Now Orange #2 is in the front, next to the dehumidifier. This helped with leaves getting thrashed by the dehuey's air.
Installed the intake fan into the bottom corner of the bloom tent (backside), opposite the side the carbon filter is on. It ran less powerfully than expected, but hopefully it should help to balance out the climate in there. I moved one of the thermo-hygrometers from beside the plants to the wall opposite the dehuey, hanging just above one of the plants.

Oranges still haven't shown their pistils, and I've been feeding them a transition-cycle nutrient mix, while the Mangoes have just been switched to early bloom. All the leaves are looking better since adding Armor-SI and Diamond Nectar, no more yellowish tops. My order of KoolBloom hasn't arrived yet, but I'm excited to add that to the mix when I can.

Mango #1's break recovered very well, and during re-training there was a second, less severe 'break'. She'll be fine, in fact I didn't even bother removing the string this time, and plan to just let her grow into training during her second recovery.

A cola that was damaged during moving the light, built a stint for it out of cardboard and tape. Not sure if it will recover or not.

I felt a lot more comfortable trimming off a few grow shoots in the lower canopy with the girls as leafy as they were. It became much easier to identify what grow shoots weren't going to do anything and were just taking up nutrition from elsewhere, and a lot of the leaves on the lower canopy that weren't seeing light were showing signs of unhappiness anyway. I ended up taking about 2 grocery bags worth of leaves and shoots from the whole tent, and things look much better now in my opinion.
All the Mangoes are starting to have visible bud-sites! Oranges aren't far behind I'm a proud papa.

Ladies look happy. It's always a very special time when those first flowers begin filling the canopy. It's like watching a child be born into the world.

I've had to work hard on training this week.
A lot of Mango colas, and Orange #1's main cola, have shot up close to the light again, and I've now got 4 out of 6 of the girls on the floor without a tote to catch their runoff, in order to keep height down, and had to result to tieing off a few branches to the same stake just to keep them down.
I am SO excited to be mainlining and keeping the heighth of my next run under control! Lessons have been well-learned As for this run, I'm just gunna let it do what it does, try to keep things down as much as possible, and not cut anything until it becomes too much of a hazard that I otherwise can't low-stress train. After keeping things under control with topping next time, I should even be able to lower the light some, and maximize light distribution in the tents.

On a brighter note, leaves are getting a lot more sugary and bud sites are getting bigger! Oranges haven't gotten sugary just yet, but the sugar leaves on the Mangoes smell absolutely delicious! Very sweet, and true to it's namesake of mangoes and sherbet! I can already tell I'm going to LOVE this bud

Buds are growing nicely on the Mango Sherbet's! I am really starting to get excited about the coming weeks. I did expect things to smell a lot danker than they do at this point, I suppose that's to come later though, when the buds are more ripe. That's not to say there isn't something to smell! If I lay a finger on anything, my hand comes back smelling great, but ambiently, nothing that potent is happening as of yet. Still have no clue what Blackened Oranges are going to smell like, but they are flowering nicely now.

Mango Sherbet's are on the last days of their mid-bloom nutrient routine, Blackened Oranges still got a bit to go before they get any late-bloom nutes. Buds are looking good on everyone, and I've taken down water consumption by leaving out a few mL each feeding until I got appropriate run-off. Baby Orange is still a dwarf, and she hasn't produced very much bud other than a little bit on her main cola, but she's not hogging up a whole lot of water during feedings, so I'll keep it going and see what she gives me.

I know things are closer to the light than optimal, two of the tops are even grown over the light and are destined for the roof. When things get developed enough, and if anything starts to get burned up by the light, I'll chop a few arms early and clear up some room. Otherwise, the main lesson from this grow has already been learned -- control height early and save myself trouble later on. Live & learn.

Some more minor training done today in the tent, took a few fan leaves from the buds that were too close to the light and had burned up. I trained the buds down a bit further afterwards too, getting them as far away from the light as I could manage.

June 10

Hi everyone! The time for harvest is getting close! The fade has hit, and Mango Sherbets are on the flush, and Blackened Oranges are only about a week behind, just about to start their last round of Late Bloom before moving on to a few days of Ripen, and then their flush

I went ahead and made the decision to pull Baby Orange; she almost stopped all production in the last week; and I'm pretty sure I know why; she was getting so beat up and chewed on by the dehumidifier it was like she was in a fight with Mike Tyson. So the ref put a stop to it
It was a little painful, knowing I was killing my first plant, but after taking her down, I feel like I'll be saving myself the dollars in nutrients, and not wasting the time and water to feed her. I ended up pulling about an eighth off her, though I'm not sure about that number just yet, it could be even less by the time it dries.

I also took some larf off of Mango Sherbert #3 to give the dehuey some more space, it was far along enough that I'm hoping it tastes decent, and if I didn't take it, it was going to see the same abuse as Baby Orange did.

June 20

Well the last of the Mango Sherbet was harvested yesterday, after took down Mango #2. Froze her larf and mids and hung what looked appealing. I harvested #1 and #3 on the 12th and 13th, and waited on Mango #2, she still had more immature buds than the others and I'm glad I waited. Mango #3 was all frozen, and Mango #1 was mostly hung to air dry. I pulled her stalks down from hanging on the 17th to manicure the buds after all the leaves were dried up, and wonder if I shouldn't have given them another day to hang. After a few days in the jar, buds were still more moist than I expected them to be, so I carefully took them out afterward and let them air dry for around 4 more hours before putting them back in the jar. The buds that were air-dried and jarred have lost a lot of the purple color they came out with. Nearly all the tops of primary bud sites had turned a very nice purple, that is fading to a kind of brownish color now that they're drying out and I was really surprised to see almost any trace of the purple it had before is just gone. I also did a larf and trim run of bubble hash; first time doing that as well. I pulled a decent amount I think, for what went in being just about 2 oz of trim and larf (it was frozen wet, so I'm only guessing at what the weight would have been if dried). I didn't pull much at all out of the higher micron bags, but the last 2 bags, 73 and 25 micron, got me several good scoops of some blonder hash than I expected.

As for Blackened Oranges, they're looking great! Tons of trichomes on their buds, and with all the Mangoes out of their way, they're seeing a lot more light, and are almost done with their Ripen nutes, I'm thinking around the 24th-25th they should be starting their Flush and finishing out toward the end of the month Very excited!
I did have to move them into my other tent, so they're only getting blurple light now for the last 2 weeks or so. I had to make the decision after things in the Veg tent were ready to turn over to Bloom and letting them Veg for much longer, I wouldn't have had room for all of them. I'll probably be waiting longer periods between flipping before beginning a new cycle from now on to prevent this problem. It will also give me ample time to clean everything up in between and keep a more sterile environment.

Anyway, here's some pics of everything I got pics of. Mango #2 hanging up, Mango #1 in the jar, Mango #3 in the freezer, and Oranges in the tent. Also what I pulled from that Bubble run.

June 30

Blackened Orange #3 is the last one standing in the tent, after Blackened Orange #1 got harvested on the 24th. The calyx's on Orange #3 weren't as swollen as and there were still a few white hairs growing. Now she's catching up, and Blackened Orange #1 has been hanging almost a week now. Her buds are taking sufficiently longer to dry than Mango Sherbet buds did, but their buds are a lot more filled out and frosty. They smelled great during harvest, wonderfully reminiscent to zesty orange peels.
I have to admit I've dipped in to the Mango Sherbet before I should have. It hasn't had time to properly cure, but now that a good bit of it is nice and dry, I'm smoking what smells decent but leaving the best of it alone to cure. Both the flower and the hash it made taste pretty good, made up of full fruity notes with a smooth background and a light hint of skunk. A minor bit of bad news, one of the plants hermied on me without me noticing and resulted in some minor pollination of a branch or two, so there are a few seeds that ended up in the mix, but very few and far between so I wasn't too upset over it.

Well, this journal is about to come to a close. After one or two more posts of some bud porn from the Blackened Oranges, I'll post some shots of what I'm able to squeeze out of the buds when I press them, and after that I'm not left with much to say other than I'm excited to grow these dank strains again! Happy Independence Day!

The first batch of Oranges has been put in tupperware and is almost ready for manicuring, and the last girl is no longer standing! Taken down late last night, I thought it may have been a few days early when she didn't have much amber on the trichs, but after humidity was climbing in my other tent, I decided to sacrifice the needs of the few to the needs of the many, and made the chop.
Though it took longer for her calyx's to swell and her hairs to amber, the fade had time to set in stronger for her than her sister, and she smelled twice as sour and more of a pungent-fuely compared to her sister's acrid fuely-greasy odors (that have softened up somewhat to a decent and constant orange peel aroma, but lack in pungent notes).
Next time I pop any of these seeds, I'll be sure to let them go a bit longer than they did this run, as well as train them properly. Same for Mango Sherbets.

Her yield wasn't quite as big as the others, but I'm still happy with it for sure. Going to give her a few weeks of drying in the closet before trimming her down and letting her finish drying in tupperware, then cure for about a month in jars with her sister buds if there's any of those left at that point

That's my best guess before drying and without really trying to measure final yield.

I re-assessed things today and I don't know what I was thinking. I doubt highly that I got those numbers I said before.
It was probably closer to 10 Oz of Mango Sherb and maybe 6 Oz of Orange. Still just a guess, but there wasn't as much as I thought of the frozen Mango per bag.

Well this feels like it will probably be the last time I post in this journal, everything is just about wrapped up with Mango Sherbet and Blackened Oranges. Both turned out to be varieties that I'm excited to grow again, but I'm not sure either have anything so extra-special about them that I want to keep them in my library long-term, though I can't say that for sure until I see how well they do under better circumstances.

"Final" notes on Mango Sherbets: Harvested a bit too early, but flavor that did develop is decent. Terpenes smelled fantastic while growing, very similar to it's namesake, but only a hint of the fruit flavor came through. Still has good sugary smell to it, and now it's beginning to cure it has a decent smoke to it; fluffy buds that burn smoothly like other sherbet strains I've tried. I can't judge it fully because of how it was raised and didn't finish properly. I'll write a much better review next time, sorry guys.

"Final" notes on Blackened Oranges: Still haven't smoked the more pungent and fuely pheno that was harvested later, but I'm certainly excited to. It smells almost like a Chem and Orange, while the pheno I'm starting to smoke on is a bit more acrid, bitter, and florals that are kind of pleasantly rotten, but still packed with orange terpenes. Trim that I've pressed into rosin has tasted almost too acrid, but the bud runs that I pressed tasted very exotic, full of zesty orange and complex floral-bitters but very little kushy taste or many other terpenes I'm used to. No candy orange or bright citrusy flavors that I've came across in other orange strains either. It's definitely a more exotic variety that has a can't-quite-put-my-finger-on bitter-floral flavor and aroma that I'll be happy to come back to later.

A few of the many lessons I took away from this first grow:
-Training is important for every indoor grow when plant structure isn't naturally compact
-Don't jar too early; wait for fully dried to avoid aspergillus
-Don't allow heat soak to build up in the room, vent exhaust air outside
-Don't start next run too soon; time appropriately to manage flip-times and tent space


I'll finish this out with a few pictures of the flower from the last Blackened Oranges and then some rosin of the first bud-run I did
