Noisy mufflers. What is the purpose?

Hello all,

In my part of town, there are many 20-year-olds with 4 bangers and noisy mufflers who punch it at every light.

Is this like a cool thing to do carried over from the Fast and Furious days? Or is it a cry for attention that is maybe not received at home? I'm trying to understand the psychology behind it since my understanding that these car "upgrades" are often not cheap?

Thoughts?

I’m generally a quiet sort of guy.

But when I procured me a dresser, I fitted it with a Thunderheader exhaust at the loud end of the possible.

It made my bike suddenly more visible to the car operators around me.

This has exactly zero to do with the abomination that is cars with “I scratch my balls in your general direction” exhausts.

This precedes Fast and Furious by 60-70 yrs. Young guys having been doing it since the 50's and it was an extension of moonshiners hopping up cars to escape the cops and "revenuooers".

It's a testosterone thing

Yes but very few know how to actually make it fast..........they throw lots of $ at it like a new grower does that has a few bucks. Everything needs to work in a harmony not just loud.

Same idea when someone says "ah it rides like a jeep" ........no you just don't get it!

LOL that is all!

The idea is to "uncork" the motor, freeing up power.
Thing is it only frees up top end power waaaay up, near redline.
That's why they are trying to get to the top of each gear.
In my shame days I had a "pea shooter, fart cannon"
Sounded sweet untill I accelerated.
Fuck me, I regretted it instantly.

Lived w it for a few months, and got a speeding ticket.

The cop exclaimed "I heard you coming from a mile away!"

I swapped it out for a quality exhaust,
That is much quieter, even gets compliments on how good it sounds.
The exhaust the car should have come with.

We have them here every night, sounds like gunshots going off or loud crackles and bangs.... I prefer the sound of a solid exhaust with a good vrooomph sound

I met a guy who was showing me a top level mercedes on his phone and said he was going to buy it next, all crackles and bangs when you press the accelerator, I asked him what you are asking, and instead of punching me, he said people like what they like, so I was like errm ok...

Yeah my best friend has a Honda that you need ear plugs (not shitting he drives with ear plugs) and I make fun of him all the time........but it is pretty cool and handles like a mofo! Solid mounts front to back.

Someone took me for a spin in mercedes 6.3 something or other and it growled like a beast, not sure which one it was, that was preferable to crackly gun shots for me

Likely someone out there dicking around with a 2-step. Its meant for launch control when racing but a lot of dickheads get them just to hit it randomly and make noise.
Some cars sound like a damn ak47 or some shit when it pops.

Commiefornia made a law against any modifications that "Increase exhaust noise" The original bill was to outlaw exhaust cutouts, which I can understand, but they just cut the throat of aftermarket exhaust companies. Sissies.

Racing driver

Description
Robert Glenn Johnson Jr., better known as Junior Johnson, was a NASCAR driver of the 1950s and 1960s. He won 50 NASCAR races in his career before retiring in 1966. In the 1970s and 1980s, he became a NASCAR racing team owner; he sponsored such NASCAR champions as Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip. Wikipedia
Born: June 28, 1931, Ronda, NC
Died: December 20, 2019, Charlotte, NC
Spouse: Lisa Johnson (m. 1994–2019)
First win: 1955 Hickory Motor Speedway

Junior Johnson was born to run moonshine.

JUNIOR JOHNSON WAS BORN TO RUN MOONSHINE.
It’s deep in his roots and it flows in his blood. Hell, back during the Whiskey Rebellion in 1791, his ancestors were some of the first to make ‘shine in Appalachia. And, about 150 years later, Junior’s family kept the tradition going in order to survive. Running moonshine wasn’t always easy, or legal for that matter, but the Johnsons did what they had to do to keep food on the table.
Too young to drive...

TOO YOUNG TO DRIVE...
Throughout the years, this rebellious approach to living sent Junior’s father and brothers in and out of prison. In fact, the only one in the family never to get busted was his dear mother. And when Junior got behind the wheel to run ‘shine at the tender age of 14, things finally started to turn around. He had the spirit of a racer, and his slick driving skills were good for the family business…and bad for the authorities in the rearview.

On December 26, 1986, President Ronald Reagan granted Johnson a presidential pardon for his 1956 moonshining conviction. In response to the pardon, which restored his right to vote, Johnson said, "I could not have imagined anything better."

Of interest to NASCAR fans.
