5x5 5k budget

I would keep the 5k budget and get the best light/genetics you can get your hands on. Imo that would be the gavita 1700e (light spread, quality name). This is just opinion based on research however, I do not own one. I am in a similar boat, I have about 10k to spend (plus I already own half of what i need including all needed genetics). 3 separate rooms to build, one of which is a 10x10. I am seriously considering the gavita 1700e for my 5x6x9 space.

What genetics do you plan on running?

Here is the order I placed the other day.
My plan is take the advice of the forum on which strain will be my first grow in over 10 years figure i will make a thread about it. I cant promise it will be this great grow thread i do own and operate a business that demands a lot of time but i will do my best to update from start to finish.

Some of the strains I have experience with are Amenisa & NYCD from Soma, AK47 Serious, DJ Short Blueberry Still my favorite grow was Northern lights from Nirvana. So easy to grow and very forgiving its funny cause it was my first grow smashed it in a 4x4 tent with 2 t5s and HPS 400 grown in water farms buckets on technaflora call mag superthrive 1 vodoo juice and gold label A&B never went above 1.4 1.6 1200 PPM. Ya know back then i really didn't buy into the whole feminized seed thing so everything i have ever grown has been from regular seeds.

So how is Advanced Nutrients? It was just coming on the scene hard core when i stopped I thought most of it was advertising im curious if it was as good as they claimed?

I used advanced nutrients, I always have though since before they were pH perfect. I find they are easy to use and I get great quality. I am uncertain how much if any better they are than anything else other than the ease of ph always being right. I think I've just found the right combo for me as I only use 2 additives from the line.

I have been seeing a lot of good things about @Useful Seeds I have yet to grow any out but he is a sponsor here and I plan to order some when I can.

I took a break from growing for a while and when I came back I too ordered some of the old school seeds I had grown before. Northern lights from Nirvana, hashberry from Mandala. And some other old school strains. The hashberry was a total disappointment as I grew a lot of those in the past and didn't find a pheno of anything even close to the ones I used to find. The northern lights was good but I only kept it a couple runs. I like a lot of the newer stuff.

Just beware there are lots of herms in genetics now. Some of those old school strains you barely ever had any, now they can be in any pack you run especially if it's a gsc descendant or cross. But if you do find a keeper it will help you realize how much weed has advanced while you were gone. Atleast it did me. Some shit is just amazing and worth watching for herms to find a good mom.

EDIT: I've found just as many or more herms in regular seeds as I have feminized. And I've run a bunch of seeds of both.

I love cmh and imagine that would work pretty good but how did you position them for coverage.
Kind of like a triangle. It distributes pretty well. I was going to throw 4 in there to see what would happen but I just dont think I'll need it.

(Edit: sort of like the flux capacitor lights lolol)

Alot of growers like the 315 CMH + led's for winter growth and LEDS only in the summer time
Try to plan on achieving 75-85 degree day temps for LEDS, because they lack infrared heat to warm up the leaves. If you think this will be tough to achieve in the winter, then try out the combo of CMH + LEDS. Not too sure the best way to mix the spectrums though.
Some LEDs do have IR bulbs built into them. My VIPAR SPECTRA 600 has probably 8 or so.

I see a lot of crazy good looking new stuff out there, but I worry about herms. If you are growing lots of plants it is quite a bit of extra work to check them for naners regularly. I have seen hermed male flowers pop up on plants and open in SHORT time. That being said, I still have some of the newer genetics because they just look so fucking good I can't not!

I just finished a run that started with 48 females from seed. I finished 44 of em and had 4 herms and some of them were as tall as me since i had some issues and over vegged waiting on them to get healthy. So yes I know for sure how much work looking for them is. I spent hours a week looking. And still missed one til I saw a pollen sack on the floor. I haven't found but one seed while trimming though and already did the plants that were around that one.

Id say 75 percent of the room or more had girl scout cookies in the lineage also. It was 10 or more different strains. The rest of the room was still newer gear. So 4 out of that many isn't too bad but was a lot of work to find em all. I'm so glad next run is all same strain from clone that I've run a bunch of times already. I will sort thru the keepers of this run after a smoke test.

OK so after reading a few threads over maybe I should reconsider the tent.

So I have a spare bedroom I could use the whole thing probably 12x12 I will measure it tomorrow. I also have a the basement open floor plan unfinished so if that's the best choice I would have to build a room or put a tent up I don't have to do a 5x5 have enough room to go 13x13x8 if a bigger tent would better. Just figured with 5 plants no need to have all the extra room

So I'm open to suggestions.

Sorry for being so indecisive Im just not sure which route is best.

On one hand I think we'll I'm only going to be living here another 5 years max probably more like 2 or 3. So is building a room worth it to just have to tear it all down when we sell the house. This is why I figured a tent would be the best route.

I'm not that great at building shit. Framing and wood work have never been my cup of tea. So another reason for a tent.

The initial cost would be more for the room then a tent.

But then on the flip side a sealed room I would have absolute control over my environment and that's one thing I told myself back in the day I would not forgo when I started again.

Thanks for all your time and help.

So does any one have any suggestions? Should i just go with what i know and run a tent since i'm only gonna be here at best 5 years. Or would the results be that much better if i build a room?

Also whats people opinions on Coco vs DWC?

I don't have any experience with coco or soil for that matter started with DWC & went to flood & drain. My plan was to buy the current culture DWC but dang it sure does come with a hefty price tag. It does look like it addresses some of the issues i had with the water-farms buckets but is it worth 3x the cost? Also If i went with the current culture a 5x5 wouldnt work so it would need to be 4x8 now i need 2 lights.

Any tips suggestions welcome. Thanks

If your living situation is 5 years max, i would go the tent route. 4x8 with two HLG 650's

Ok.

Do you have a opinion on Coco vs DWC or Ebb & Flow? My thought was with coco and pots I could move plants around have more floor space for my self when I'm working in the tent not to mention no chiller less places for things to go wrong or cause issues. Lower initial cost then DWC.

To be honest when I read through the threads it seems like a lot of issues a rise in Coco. But with no experience I'm not sure. Thanks

Im an organic grower, no hydro experience.

good LED will emit 60% of it's input energy as heat a CMH will emit 70% of its input energy as heat so the difference in heat is not that great LEDs do produce heat

That is negligible. So do you run CMH or LED? These are things I'm curious about when it comes to LED VS CMH. I'm looking for what works best ot worried about cost. But UT if it's negligible then I really don't see the reason in spending the extra cash on LED just to be the cool kid on the block. I want quality first then production then cost to own & use comes into play.

Please anyone feel like chiming in feel free. I've asked a lot different questions proba KY should of made new threads but trying to keep things in one area. Thanks for your time.

My Timbers run about 8 degrees above the room the tents are in. Right now have the AC set at 76 and tents are 84 and its 88 outside. I only have to run AC in the dog days of summer.

.

Phishphan if I were just gearing up and I had $5K I would invest it in a 1000 watt Black Dog LED and buy one of their complete grow kits.

If you don't go the Black Dog route, it's not for everyone, take a look at their kits to see what you need.

Best of luck.
