I am considering swapping from soil to hydro growing... I need some input on how to set up best... inexpensive to get through first grow. Then I can upgrade. What will I need to start hydro grow?

Sorry friend, but thats waaaaaaay to general a question. There are way too many types of hydro with hundreds of variations. You need to do some homework and then come back with some specific questions, and a budget, and some details like how many plants you want to grow, how much space you have etc etc etc.

Id suggest you start by reading threads in this forum and see if anything grabs your fancy. Make notes. Then come back :)

Definitely go with an outboard rez, which simplifies life by allowing you to check level, pH, EC/PPM, and change nutes

I have a huge mosquito problem where I live, so I have to use lids

As a soil grower your best bet and the easiest is to do drain to waste with a pot and pro-mix as your medium and your choose of top brand nutrients.

If you want to get your feet wet in hydro to see if it's for you or not, I recommend a very simple system like a hempy bucket or something similar. I grow autos in a 1 gallon set up (similar to hempy) and have no problem getting 3+ ounces with a little over 100 watts. I use nothing but Advanced Nutrients Sensi Bloom for both veg and flowering. Not having to worry about pH makes hydro so much more pleasant and productive ..for me, at least. Good luck!
