Is there anything in the $200-300 Range that would be good? Or what about a solar storm 440?
Since you wont be using the entire space for flowering heres what I recommend.

Get a 2x4 tent. put extraction fan so its pulling from tent, into filter in the room. Dont worry about exhausting outside, just run your AC.

Grab a 4 pack of these HLG qb120 boards for $130 -10% off w code RIU10.

get a Meanwell 240W driver. You have a few options there, but will cost about $30-50.

Under $200 for lighting, so u can spend $100 on a decent tent.

what kind of output would that push out? in terms of yield, watts, etc

Quantum boards can hit 1G per watt easily, once you have your grow dialed in. Expert growers can push 2G per watt. But honestly dont focus on yield. This is the current best (well one gen old) light for your money. It will require a little DIY of connecting some wires into holes but does not require heatsinks. These diodes will last you a very long time.

If you really want to learn, you gotta read and educate yourself. Here is the official HLG thread. They designed a very popular pcb layout for Samsung diodes that they branded Quantum Boards.

Here is the link to the last page, you can see from recent posts what kind of yields people get.

There are also other threads ie search Chinese knockoffs quantum boards if you want to save a few bucks by buying direct from China. (HLG boards are made in USA as well).

As another idea, you could grab 2 packs of these QB120s, and a 2nd driver (or just get one 480w driver to save a few $) so that you could cover a 4x4 area. I would still recommend the tent for an extra barrier against pests but you could skip that.

Also to clarify, with DIY whatever driver you buy is "true watts" not like the one you showed in your first post. So a 240W driver would be 240 real watts. In my example using 4 QB120 boards, each board would then get 60W. This would give you a nice even spread of light over your canopy instead of one bright spot in the middle and weak light at edges. This will also help with yield.

I like the idea of a tent and the 4x4 option. That's a nice sized space so might as well have a little more room in the tent. You could probably just start by lighting a 2x4 area as ilovereggae recommends. Then, expand to lighting the other half for twice the fun.

ok...what if i decided to go with 600 watt hps lights....would my initial set up be ok? or would i still need a smaller area tent?

you'd get better results in a tent because of the reflective walls and light proofing.

you can do it without the tent just photons from your lights will be bouncing all around the room and you'd have to light proof the entire room to make sure its completely dark for lights off unless you only grow autos which i wouldn't recommend.

You'd need a lot of LED and it's not gonna be cheap. Otherwise just use HID.

so, 1 4x4x8 tent would be better for the grow? and leave the AC in my garage window outside of the tent while venting right into the garage? and if i do that, would i have to create a passive intake hole?
