I thought about posting this in the Outdoor section, but I don't want to get into discussions about the pros and cons of autos, so I thought I'd try it here.
Because of the short grow season where I live, I've gone to 100% auto strains for my outdoor growing. I'm curious how other growers are doing, successes, failures, lessons learned. I started growing photos in 2015, and in 2018 started mixing in some autos before going full auto last year.
I've grown them in pots and in the ground, and found that some plants when put in the ground without root limits will really take off, so this season they were all in the ground. We have really bad budworm issues, so the last two years I've grown under bug netting (much easier to do with autos since they tend to stay under 5' tall). The netting works great, but has some drawbacks. It cuts the light about 20-30% depending on the quality of the net, and also cuts airflow (haven't read a stat on how much). I blame the airflow issue for the mold I've been finding, although I'm not sure if autos are simply more susceptible to mold?
I popped seeds later than usual, 6.11 this year, and took them down between 8.28 and 9.3. Depending on the month and placement in the garden, the plants got between 5 and 7 hours of direct sunlight. The ones taken down in August were a bit early, but they were showing mold so I had to cut them. I've jarred 4 of 6 so far, and even with taking them down early and losing about 10% to mold, I'm averaging about 5.8 ounces per plant (ranging from 4.9 to 6.7).
So, how are your outdoor auto harvests going? Are you growing in pots, if so, what size? Share any info, techniques, issues you feel like --
Thanks
