a while ago buddy of mine did a grow. everything looked good, smelled good, cured nice......but like no thc punch what so ever. turns out he used random bag seeds from a garbage strain (i always wondered where people got mids and it turns out you grow it by accident lol). got me thinking though, the plant looked the shit and the buds looked great, so genetics has gotta be more important than lights, medium or nutes.

i base this on the fact ive seen awesome dank smelling herb with no kick and the exact opposite which is shit that looked like it was grown in a ditch outside of Tijuana but still smoked good.

I think they are both important. You can grow horrible stuff with great genetics through mistakes in your grow and can end up with something pretty good even with garbage genetics if you have your other attributes dialed in. That said I would agree that good genetics is a very important starting point but you can screw them up quick with a poor environment.

yes genetics are (by far) the most important. think of people. even if i ate wheaties every day and ran sprints i'm still never gonna beat usain bolt.

once you get growing down genetics is the only thing that matters.
i agree totally, and will add that even for experienced growers there are huge variables that can define or limit success Factors like potency...for example, its well known that the UVa and especially UVb light-bands are far stronger from the sun, CMH and MH lights than CFLs, HPS or many LEDs...and more UV = more THC. Or coco/hydro vs soil and the size differentials between them. Or super-cropped clones vs big untrimmed plants. Or a giant horrible looking outdoor plant that is under attack by aphids and has seeds, yet ends up being the most mind-bending smoke you’ve ever had simply because it had great genes! I agree that good genetics are the ultimate limiting factor, and that additionally there are things every one of us can try to increase size/strength/maturation/etc......but absolutely nothing can defeat shit genetics no matter how good it looks.

Some of the most popular genetics being sold today came from bag seed. There are lots of people growing fire from bag seed.

Genetics are very important but so is lighting and environment. You see people all the time growing expensive fancy genetics under a crappy light in a crappy environment harvesting crappy pot.

It's all equal, majority of seeds I've purchased have turned out to be great weed but a true keeper is 1 in 75-100. That being said a bad grower or someone who doesn't have their setup in good working order can ruin great genetics and produce mids as well.

Not saying you need a space ship fully sealed room to kill it, I grew for years in tents with constant negative pressure and that weed is still some of the best I've smoked. Yields do to tend to climb the more money you invest but a very modest setup can produce some of the best weed around as long as your competent and can provide a favorable growing environment.

Genetics are the top limit of your grow. Everything being perfect they will be the limiting factor. So you can only get a certain greatness. Really shit genetics you can only do so much no matter what.

No shit, No matter how much Wheaties I eat, I'm still no Patrick Maholmes. I guess I just need to eat more, and get a suntan.

Need the energy to feed the genetics, I’m 50/50, just go balls to wall on both and call it a day.

Like Chem originally came from bagseed.

I still say genetics is the biggest factor. Chemdawg got seeds from some bomb ass weed, so the genetics were kick ass to begin with. Lots of strains came from bagseed actually.

Maybe not, but your own brother might be!
Ya, but athletic genes are definitely a factor. Some families have more superstar athletes than others. Think of the Manning's, the Watt's, and so many more families who are just born gifted athletes. There's a ton of brothers playing in the NFL now.

Those athletic types also usually marry someone who is also a gifted athlete, so their good genetics combine, and bring us the Patrick Maholmes's of the world.

So I say genetics is the biggest factor. Sure if you starved those guys and tortured them they wouldn't be the same person, but they have a higher ceiling than I do, genetically. I'd be some dirt weed if I was a plant.
