Low temp flowering experiment?

So due to various reasons that are too boring to explain, I’ve got a couple spare plants (one male, one female) that I sprouted on a lark and are ready to flower. Also got a clone of my wife’s favorite cultivar ready to flower.

I live in a double-wide trailer and don’t have room for the tent in the house, so it will need to stay in the garage. I anticipate temperatures will not go below freezing but could get into the 30s F in my garage. I just flipped and expect the plants would be done sometime in December.

The thing is, I have never flowered at such low temperatures before. How much will low temps slow the flowering process? Will the plants themselves be able to live in temperatures that hover between 65 F — 35 F for a couple months?

Please keep in mind, this is an experiment. These plants were all started on a lark and I am not going to cry a river if none of this works out. I don’t really give a shit.

That said, this is science. Bro science? Perhaps. More like drunken Grandma science, but these are semantics.

My primary purpose with this thread is to see if folks have tried flowering at low temperatures and what they found.

My secondary purpose is for people to take bets on whether or not such a dumb idea can even work, or how badly I will fail. I am not worried about it — like I said, this is an experiment with plants that were germinated as an afterthought.

And just to answer any questions that come up: No, I am not able to move my tent indoors from the garage. My wife doesn’t have room and I don’t give enough of a shit to argue about it. No, I am not going to run an unattended heater in my garage. Yes, I will post pics but not right now because they are in dark period.

im about to enter a similar challange with mu grow, 2 x kindu kush clones and 1 each of amnesia haze and bubble gum all cbd strains under 2 ts600 mars hydro lights. i have a 1m x 1m tent, but i have the luxuary of mh / hps to use if the verdict is not good

what light you useing in the tent? mh or sodium or led
An LED, the brand is King LED but I can’t remember the details. The light is blurple. I was pretty drunk when I ordered it and am too drunk to remember specifics right now, LOL.

I read somewhere that cannabis can’t be relied upon to survive in temps consistently below 70 F so I guess we will be testing that hypothesis, with the added twist of flowering.

What lights do you plan to run and how big is the tent.

It’s a King LED blurple type light and the tent is about 2 x 4 feet. I hate to show my hillbilliness so obviously but that’s all I remember. Please don’t ask about watts or lumens because I can’t remember. I grow outdoor and just fuck around indoors for shits and giggles.

well the lowest king i can find is a 1000w 180watt actual draw, they use ten watt double leds. i reckon you should be good with the heat the light will pump out

It will grow at 65F but the plants will photosynthesize slower. Temps getting near freezing is another story. I'm not exactly sure what the threshold is that is "too" cold for cannabis to grow, but I wouldn't expect much with temps near 35F. Either throw an HPS in there or a space heater.

I've been here and done that. GET A HEATER!

The growth will be drastically decreased, and it will be very hard to get the plants to transpire and resperate properly at those temps. Which will mean they won't uptake nutrients properly making it hard to feed them right. Its a whole chain reaction that will result in more time and hassle during the grow.

The last time I faced really cold temps was last winter/spring. I had clones I'd been running for a few years that took 3+ additional weeks to complete their life cycle over what they normally took. It would have been longer still if I hadn't gotten a second heater set up and temps fixed. Once I got the temps straight the plants went back to completely normal growth and finished flowering without issue.

As mentionned, growth and bud develeopement are severely slowed when the root zone goes below 50*, an electric fan heater works but can use 750-1500 watts on its own, an oil heater pays for itself many times over if you go this route, they retain heat so well, I cant stomach the electric bill so I dont go this route.

As a canadian grower I also am forced to grow in my unheated garage in winter by the wife, temps get below freezing even inside the garage, -20 C outside. What I do is use electric heat pads under the pots, I have them turn on when the lights turn off. I find a 20 watt pad will keep a 3 gallon pot plenty happy, the root zone will stay in the 60's.they sell them as rv water tank heater pads, or aquarium heater mats, all in various sizes and wattage ratings

Or they sell larger electric heated pet bed mat, electric battery blankets wraps if you wanted to place multiple plants on one large pad. Plenty of options to suit your grows needs. I really like the reptile terranium pads myself, only 10-20 watts per pad and only $5-$10 each and they have high qaulity water rated connections

On a side note Ive tried growing without any heating supplement in our 50 degree cold cellar, and my yield dropped literally 75%, plants just dont bulk or even grow when the roots are so cold

I ended my last crop in 67F for the last 3-4 weeks.. brought out some nice purple in the bud. Currently have 4 clones at week 4 of flower in 71F. I really don't think you will be wasting your time. I like to experiment myself.. That's how I ended up with 4 clones. lol Good luck with the grow.. I know you are doing it for the shits & giggles, but I hope it turns out to be jaw dropping results. :peace::eyesmoke:

Oh forgot to say - in my experience cold nights and warm days in extreme circumstances make the plants stretch like crazy during the transitional flowering period.

Something to bear in m
