contemplating a diy carbon scrubber with replaceable carbon

I've read a couple d.i.y projects on the web consisting of making your own carbon scrubber for your grow room. I guess I'm just curious if anyone on here has tried it and how did the results fair? Girlfriend gave green light to the grow but carbon scrubbers failed now after 6 months and not looking to spend $250 a year on scrubbers. Would be great to just get a 5 gallon bucket of activated charcoal from the fish store and just keep refilling as need be.

Just curious to hear everyones thoughts before I buy all the stuff to make it.

You probably want pellets vs raw, just for ease of handling and uniform air flow.
Best of luck on your new hobby.

Maybe re fill the old filter with fresh carbon, and use it as a scrubber for the room.

I have (1) 6 inch vivosun and (1) 4" vivosun. they lasted two grow cycles, now I'm on the 3rd and I'm not only getting less cfm moving through them, but also a lot less odor reduction. Both filters are attached to AC Infinity t4 and t6 thermostat controlled fans. This is in a dual chamber grow tent, total 20sqft. I figure this system is total overkill for such a small grow. I remember scrubbers I was buying from the hydrostore a decade + ago would last a long time so maybe I do just have a junk scrubber.

What's everyone buying in terms of a quality scrubber then? Its been about 10 years since I've last grown indoors (hydro). Experienced outdoor grower.

IMHO - space / fan / filter need to be factored in.
And unfortunately, I feel the same bad marketing on lights is starting to apply here:

I bought a 4" Vivosun / filter combo. It lasted 3 weeks, but Vivo's customer service was great and I had no downtime.
the second 4" fan became unbalanced and NOISY.
Pretty sure I was just asking too much from that fan - in a 4x4 with a filter, I should be moving about 250cfm.
The Vivo is rated to 205.....

I picked up an AC Infinity T6 (6" fan) - it runs at setting 2-6 - handles the load much easier than the 4"
