Because the photos needed to flower. I thought the autos would be done before the switch but they needed to finish and the photos needed to switch or they would be larger than I wanted. I have to work with plant count restrictions. But it's more flowering plant numbers.....I can only have two in flower. This way when the photos are vegging I can have autos flowering under 24.
Makes sense. We have plant count restrictions too.

How do you get photos from auto plants then?
Aside from a random mutation, that can happen any time.
Start here. I'm still learning true breading myself but I've chucked pollen for a long time.

Think of a big family....... some kids look like mom.....some dad......and some look like both.

I'll look there, but this is what I learned from a guy who has been breeding a while. If he's wrong I've never seen any evidence of it.
Autoflowering is a recessive trait. If you mix two autos they make autos. If you mix an auto and a photo, you get fast flowering in the f1. If you breed the fast flowering together, you'll get 25% auto, 50% fast, 25% photo.

Yes. Through selectively breeding those plants from the f2 generation that show auto traits to the photo strain you're trying to make auto back to the photo strain. That makes another set of auto/fast/photo strains. And you do that again, and again. Until the genetics are mostly the photo strain, but the flowering genes are auto.
I'm aware of that.
