I grow autos and photos equally. Here is my conclusion on which is better for a novice grower.

Hi all...I'm at the end of a photo grow that was 108 days from start to finish. The grow diary link is in my sig in case you're curious. I grow autos and photos in equal proportion. It's for my own use, plus I give some to family...therefore I don't care about yield, but I do care about quality....and time. On this photo grow the quality is really really good. About equal in quality to Mephisto, Dinafem and HSC Blue Dream autos. In other words...no discernable difference in quality between good autos and good photos. Where I did notice a difference is in time. My time is valuable, so I have decided I will only grow photos in the summer going forward for energy reasons. All things being equal I get an identical return for a 75 day auto grow that I get from a 108 day photo grow.

I've been growing at home for about 6 years now...not an expert, but I've learned a thing or three. The most important thing I've learned is autos are a no brainer for novice growers like me.

YMMV and all that..

I'm in a similar boat, I started a little over 5 years ago growing indoors and outdoors with all photos, but this year have gone full auto (and am now outdoor only). We are finishing up the last jars of my last ever photo indoor grow from the 2019/2020 winter. As we smoke our way through them, we are noticing small differences. There is no doubt that the photo buds are denser and seem to have less and/or smaller stems in the buds, making them a little easier to pack bowls with (not requiring being cleaned up as much). But the quality, flavor, and potency of top tier autos is equal to the photos I was growing. And I can say that with the Mephisto strains I've grown, they produce rosin in a NugSmasher at least as well as any photo I've tried.

I came to autos because they fit our outdoor grow season. If we had a longer dryer grow season, I'm not sure what would have pushed me to experiment with them. They have been a real game changer for me though. With photos is was feast or famine and the whole season came down to how wet and cold our fall was that particular year. Either I had literally extra pounds of awesome buds that I didn't know what to do with, or we ended out losing large percentages of the crop from mold and bud rot, and harvesting the rest before it was fully ready just to save it. The autos consistently tend to finish while the days are still longer and dryer, avoiding our often harsh and unpredictable fall weather. So, in terms of the title of this thread, for my region at least for any novice intending to grow outdoors, it's autos hands down.

For an indoor grower, in some ways I would say that photos can be easier for a novice and more forgiving than autos. Mostly, what I've found is that a photo can have a "rough childhood" and bounce back strongly by extending the veg time, thereby absorbing rookie grower mistakes. Some autos, on the other hand, are sensitive to and react badly (for instance) to cold temps and/or low humidity in their first weeks, and they won't have time to recover as robustly. That has varied between strains and it's just an observation. The other nice thing about starting a beginner from photos is that you can give them some clones, and it doesn't cost anybody anything (but time). But it's all shades of gray, no right or wrong here.

I might be overlooking it, but I haven't found a US supplier for Dinafem, and Mephisto is totally hit or (mostly) miss on availability. I found a source for Dutch Passion seeds and blew this year's budget on those, so next summer I'll see how they do. With so many states and countries going legal, and autos great outdoor potential for higher latitude/shorter grow seasons, I hope the worlds seed producers can adjust to the growing demand.

I'm experimenting a little with CS and feminization, making my own seeds is somewhere between a fun hobby and a last resort, since for all the time and work the quality is not guaranteed.

Geez that was long, sorry.

I looked at your photo plants and they look real nice. I can't see how you get the same yield with an auto in 70 days as a photo in over 100. I can pull 8oz average on a 4 month photo and my 10 week autos average 3oz

There are journals on AFN where (1) auto have seen 10 and 12 oz. 3 oz seems like you just didn't have top shelf genetics or really dialled in for the autos. Even on my 1st auto grow i got 10 oz and 1 plant was bigger than the other it was closer to a 6 oz and 4 oz split. Add to that it was my 1st grow with QB leds and the auto pot system. I topped them as well. Ripley's OG by Mephisto. The right breeders and strains and good setup could get you 8 oz from an auto as well.

Yeah for sure there are and it can happen. But not consistently. Not to mention he said 70 days. Yeah I can get 6 oz or more off an auto when I top them. That also adds at least a couple weeks of veg time. Ive ran meph. Ive ran rocbud. Great quality. 10 oz in 70 days? No.

Meh. Just cause it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it's never happend to anyone else though. Is what it is. McStrats is definitely one of the better auto growers here since i started in 18' switching from photos so I'd bet on his word based on his stuff I've seen.

Never did i doubt his skills. I looked at his photo plants and they look killer. I couldn't find any of his autos at first glance. With that being said I still think its a bold claim to say a 70 day auto will yield the same as a 100+ day photo. Thats all I'm saying

And as for the "just because it hasn't happened to you" portion; I said I can make that happen. But look at the average of auto grows. The vast majority are not getting 8 oz per plant. Sure it can happen. Some largemouth bass are 8lbs. If I go fishing for bass im not expecting to catch an 8pounder.

Thanks. This is a Mephisto Alien Vs Triangle auto at 10 weeks. I harvested at 75 days and she yielded close to 1/2 a LB of dense fruity nugs. No topping or training. I start them off in a solo cup with a CFL like 4" away from the seedling. I get lateral branches that way instead of a leggy seedling and the end result is multiple colas. My yield/per day (if your doing the math) was much higher than any photo I've grown. The quality was as good as any photo I've grown. Autos are still relatively in their infancy but I guarantee you within 5 years most non-commercial growers will be growing autos.

Both photos and autos are pretty close nowadays in terms of yield and quality. Its pretty much a preference now, there are pros and cons for each type "clone vs seed and etc." so to each his own.
