I read that electronic ballasts Lumeteck,etc...are not digital ballasts.
What is a true digital ballast? Any links? Thanks
'Digital' is an over used over hyped term. Its not always the best.

There are electronic ('digital') ballasts and inductive (magnetic)

Digital is all 1 and 0, just a lot of them. So either something is on or off, fully

analog is infinite in its resolution. So *any* value between 0 and 1, for a comparison.

Now, if there is a microprocessor in the mix, it gets billed as digital. Nearly all microprocessors are digital (seen a few analog and clockless over the years, but never really 'hooked' into the main stream)

A ballast is a current limiting device. The inductive do it via a pair of coils wrapped around a metal core (steel, copper, aluminum. and the metal matters) As the field in the primary winding collapses, it sends a current into the secondary winding (aka:induction)

Electronic will do it via a pulsed signal tossed through a solid state switch of some sort. triac, SCR, etc. The pulse duty cycle and freq is controlled and can vary for different reasons Toss a tordial in the mix too.

In a nutshell.

As for 'true' vs fake, probably not a real issue, and just marketing hype on the digital front.

Are "digital" balasts typically more expensive?

Great reply Bigbud, you always come with the knowledge... Holy shit I almost just coughed out a lung!!! Anyway, just wondering on the dual 600 issue that was mentioned earlier... Suppose you have a 4 light set up, and you are using 4 1000 w lights, in a 10 x 10 room, like a bedroom.... If you were to switch to the dual 600s, would you still stay at 4 lights, and just go down to 2 ballasts? Or would you have to replace EACH 1000w light with TWO 600w lights, bringing the total to 8 lights in the room? If so, would those 8 600 w do better than 8 1000 w lights? Or would you have to put up 16 600's to get the better effect? Oh and a couple other things... You mentioned the 1/0 thing for digi ballasts.. Does that explain why they are supposed to be more efficient than magnetic ballasts? I've heard that digital, or electronic, ballasts give you more lumens and are more efficient than mags, and quieter to boot!! Oh, and check out the next thread Im starting about curing. Man, I have amillion questions about it, and this latest thing that happened to me is a trip!!

looks really cool. :blsmoke:

I think that website in the link is either run by you or a friend of yours... theres no way you can actually support such a crappy site unless you were getting paid to say it was "amazing"

further more... Idk what your talking about calling HTG shit, HTG has amazing prices and rather good quality supplies... Idk why people look up to you so much... sure you can grow weed... but your morals need some work...

they both take a few minutes to reach peak brightness. one take a little longer than the other.
