I had excellent results from Miracle Grow Performance Organics soil. Its a black bag, picked it up at Lowes. I added some extra perlite, but my plants loved it. Its not expensive, and should be available at any big box store. I like to use home depot because they sell plain perlite in 3 cu ft bails cheap. Only perlite at my Lowes is the miracle gro stuff, and it has some kind of nutrient coating, or nutrients mixed with it.
I also picked up a sub irrigated planter at Lowes. $30 for a 20" x 24" planter. Plants are showing incredible growth and are super healthy. I grabbed some Dr Earth Homegrown dry nutrients, and ammended my soil with half the recommended amount before filling the planter. Honestly a SIP is the way to go. Just fill the reservoir with water every other day, and watch them do their thing
$30 for a sip, $25 for 2 bags of MG organic soil, and $8 for nutrients and you'll be on your way to some monster plants.
