Is your weed good enough to win a competition?

I've lived in a legal state for a long time and I've tried just about everything that was available during the medical marijuana card days and on through the recreational market. I always try to snag anything that's won some kind of bud tender award or Cannabis Cup or High Times type of thing -just to see what is considered to be "the best". But...I swear....Almost everything I have grown (almost) has been considerably better than the best in the current commercial market. I am about 2 weeks away from harvesting a bag seed from some Gorilla Glue #4 that already looks many times better than the $60 an eighth jar I have sitting here, that I got the bag seed from!

Whenever I come to this forum, I see people's grows and they CRUSH these award winners. So, I was wondering if there was any type of contest among just home growers who aren't necessarily affiliated with an industrial type setting. It would be fun to see what the common grower could put up against the big guys.

I would like to see and try for myself what these award winning buds are like.
Only way to say if my stuff is better haha
I'm sure there are plenty of homegrowers that have been at it in the basement their whole life, just growing. And that's all they will ever do, and they got some of the best.
A lot of commercial grows skip that first step of really getting to know the plant, and what makes it happy.
Also, some areas where cannabis has become legal, people who were previously prosecuted for cannabis offenses before the laws changed, were then barred from participating in the legal industry.
This shut out a lot of talented growers

Yeah it's weird when I've been growing forever and see these commercial "master" growers who think growing for three years is a long time

Well we all know about pheno types and why you clone that mom you’ve been keeping.

no two plants are the same. Except clones.
If you could grow a clone from the exact plant that won the “award” that would be cool.

But I agree that a lot of home grown beats most of the store bought stuff.

The commercial market here in Detroit is all hype, med side and rec. The shops are selling top shelf 1/8ths for $60 and most of it is sub par. The new thing is exotics and rapper weed...(Little Wayne has a whole line for $65 an 1/8...lol) Put any ole mids strain in a fancy little zip lock baggie with a fancy logo and you can get $520 an ounce around these parts. (Tell em Tupac grew it .)

I was still using the medical dispensaries on occasion and noticed the last time I purchased flower the sticker on the fancy little bottle with the THC percentages on it said, "THC can be plus or minus 15% the marked percentage"...lol
So they can say its 30% THC when its only 15% and there's no harm no foul.

Oh its just keeps getting worse...

15% of 30% THC is 4.5 so they mean it could range from 25.5% - 34.5% but most likely more in the range of 25% as I doubt it's going to be any higher than what they state. I also wouldn't put too much faith in lab results matching what you actually end up getting. But I hear you. It's all marketing as if they're selling to children that are taken in by shiny packaging and cool sounding names.

I have friends that come over with their dispensary weed and they all end up wanting to smoke what I've grown.
