How did you find a mother?

I'm going about the biz of finding one.

1st attempt I chose to order 10 seeds of something enticing to me, White Runtz from Anesia. Took the best looking 4 to go into a scrog in coco. Now it's a pheno race between those 4 with a hope the quality is what I want. That cost about $120 but I also got some freebies out of it.

I'm sticking to 4 plants at a time in the scrog with 1 other outside the scrog. The 1 other this time is an autoflower because my stock is low & I wanted to test run an autoflower.

I sure don't mind paying more to get a known quality girl so I've been poking around Strainly hoping to find a reputable seller with what I want but Strainly looks kinda risky & I'm a little hesitant to spend $250 + I assume about $30 in shipping for a clone, especially when the seller always seems to be 1,600 or more miles away

Have you had any luck getting a mother through Strainly?

To find a good mother, you could source breeder cuts as they generally shotgun enough beans to find a special pheno. Shotgunning beans is the best way, in this case though the more beans you can shotgun, the better the chance of finding something special. When hunting for quality breeders cuts the prices can get up above $1000.

To shotgun a SoG setup is ideal because you can flower out a larger number of plants. I prefer to keep the original plant as a mother and flower out clones taken from all the plants. AS you find males you can cull the corresponding plant out of veg as well. It's important to make sure you keep plants numbered and not mix anything up lol. It's a little faster to flower the plants from seed but after cutting them for a clone they will want to grow bushy and thats not suited to a SoG and there is also a possibility of not rooting some of the clones. It takes a little longer to root and flower the clones but when you do it this way the mother plant/s have plenty of time to veg and get big so that once you have selected the winner it's ready to provide all the clones you need.

And on a final note, fuck auto flowers, they are a disservice to the cannabis gene pool. May they all rot in hell.

Thanks for the tips.
I've yet to do a SoG & not eager to switch since I just invested in a bucket system from the Bucket Co. so I'll probably go with a cut from Strainly.

How long has it been since you did an autoflower? I understand they have come a long way but I won't know until I grow one. What's your experience? Just terrible quality? I'm doing a Fastbuds Wedding Cheesecake I chose from the selection of freebies in my last order.

The more you sprout, the more you grow out, the more you select, the better the chances finding a great mother. It makes the case to learn seed making. I get to roll through a hundred to find two or three special bluediesels. My mom told me to keep my head down and look for money. Lol. And the looking is the best part of growing, in my opinion.

Pheno hunt is fun, these are my S1 feminized bred Girl Scout forum cuts. A couple were super sensitive and lanky. The other half were strong and stacked. And I’ve got a lifetime supply of beans but thought let’s see how a handful come out

Big mistake killing off over half the plants because the best mom may have hit the trash can before ever showing her potential. Sometimes the best looking ones are just ones you happened to water better or were positioned in a more favorable spot in your grow space. Should have ran them all. Anyways..the best way to find mom is to factor in effect and yield. I go for the most potent smoke. If you’re happy with the yield then keep her. If you have bad luck and your best quality plant has unacceptable yield than run another pack because when you settle for second place potency, you’ll always be haunted by the one you let go. You want top notch potency and acceptable yield with potency being most important in my book

grab seed (like you did). pop seed in the manners that you can (some dont have time and space to pop 100s of seeds at once, keep moms, etc) you can get lucky with good genetics from solid breeders who know what they are doing with the seed they provide. ethos is great. ive had some great finds in some fem packs of Barneys farms newer stuff too. once you pop seed you can either, grow them out take clones and flower the plant you took a clone from, or take a clone, keep the plant as a mom and then flower the clone. if im doing a small scale pheno hunt I will pop the seeds I need for the grow, and then grow them to where I want them and then I will take a clone right before the flip, let them flower and then keep the clone of the one(s) I liked the best etc.

It isn't easy tossing out plants! I actually put the remaining ones in my cloner just to see how they'd do & then transferred the biggest of those into a small pot to see how it would do after a transplant. I wish I had a warehouse to grow in.

To borrow from Lee Iacocca, Quality is Job 1. I have enough space to easily meet my needs for qty.

Here is the "also ran" in the small pot next to her sister in the green coco bucket. It's only about 1/4 of the size of the smallest of the plants in coco. It suffered some CO2 burn just like the others.

My pheno hunt usually involves 3-5 seeds per strain minimum, and multiple strains. I generally keep less than half of strains, and keep one pheno per strain long term.
If a strain is really good, I order more in an attempt to obtain an even better mother.

On my last seed order, I popped 32 seeds and kept 3 mothers in the long run. So two bunk harvests, and then onto great harvests. At one point, there were over 32 rooted clones.
Many of the lesser clones still get flowered once.

I had clones everywhere, clones at friends' houses etc. But we had known-good mothers in about 5 months.

It saves MONTHS to share genetics with friends, and report the results to each other.

The biggest pain in the ass of my entire grow in keeping the clones alive between weeks 2-4.
I have one mother than roots fast, then yellows and stalls for weeks.... I have another strain that NEVER shows roots in under ten days, then takes off. Difficult genes to clone.

As long as you stick to quality breeders, you'll likely find something worth keeping out of a pack of seeds. Like others have said, BEST practice is to keep the plant grown from seed for the mother, so get that group to a size to take cuts, then grow out the cuts and keep the corresponding best mommy. It's fun to keep a collection of the best of the best mommies you can find, then you know exactly what you are getting each time you grow out their cuts.
