Public Water & Chlorine Question...

Yeah, I have a Veiled Chameleon, a Panther Chameleon, a Yellow-Throat Plated lizard, a Horned Mountain Dragon, 2 Red Ear Slider turtles, a Russian Tortoise, 2 rats, a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach(yes I have a pet cockroach. He's pretty neat too), and of course fish, and thanks to my fiancee we also have 5 freaking cats
But at least with all the heat lamps/uvb lamps/heaters/filters/etc I have a good excuse for the power consumption of my plants if ever asked

cool, I have 2 snakes, both are corn snakes... hmm this is off topic no? lol anyway, they eat , fed em today, and they ate 7 or 8 mice each. I buy in bulk from the net at .30 cents a mouse. I also got a 10 gallon with 3 zebra fish in it. The snakes, criss cross is his nake, err actually it was the other one, since the tanks on top, inside of the snake cage, the snake try's to eat the fish, and she/he swims to lol. So far it's eatin only one. I got 3 new fish, zebra fish, and there to fast I think. I need those top swimmers that don't move much, the see through ones, gotta wait out the zebra's for now though. Also, get this.. I went to the dog pound to get a dog, and picked one up, it was a pup with big tall ears and I had to have him, even though I went looking for a fem, it said he was a shep/X witch means some kinda shepheard, turned out to be A Dutch shepherd. lol I thought, coooool, a dutch shepherd? never heard of them before. He's so cool, he's bridle color and has like half blond half black hair, but his tall ears that are so danky. I also been to Amsterdam so this dog fits me well.

The Dutch do everything very well. Reef tanks? Dutch are incredible. Planted? Go get a gander at the Dutch. Breeding quality horses? Almost ain't nothin' like a Dutch Fresian (with the exception of Spanish Andalusian).

yeah ive been to all those wholesalers i like sea dwelling because of all there trigs and puffers and such. one of the stores i worked at was 55 years old i would get full voltage jolts all the time litterally a few times a week. it seems like most tanks carry a little current even with ground probes i would always have cuts on my hands and you could always feel the electricity on the wounds. one guy i know got infected with micobacterium marinum fish t.b. in humans it causes lymph nodes to swell ussualy contracted when you get cut on corals or rocks very rare though.

Yowch! The other one that no one thinks about is.. crap, can't remember the name of the bug, but you get it if you're bitten by a pinniped (I did a short gig at Long Beach Aquarium, I do NOT dig seals or sea lions up close). That can be some nasty shit.

What you say makes a lot of sense. I tend to think of water chemistry as it applies to swimming pools, but I think aquarium knowledge translates more directly than pool knowledge in this case. It's good to know that a little ammonia isn't a problem, I'll be picking up some s. thiosulfate soon.

Should I not use distilled water at all? I just bought a gallon because it's taking too long for the chlorine to evaporate out of the tap water. I was going to mix up an organic tea with it, but if you don't think I should, I won't. Thanks for the input.

hey guys, just wanted to let you know from personal experience that the chlorine in your distribution system will most likely NOT affect your ladies, weather you are growing hydro or soil. I think that it was AL B FUCT who even did some experiments with using both clorinated and dechlroinated water, makes no difference. The chlorine residuals that you typically see in your home are low enough, prob somewhere between .2mg/l to around 1.5mg/l mine at my house in southern ontario is around 1mg/l.
I work for a big municipality and I do water for a living, I am a licienced water operator. I think people are putting far too much importance on the Cl issue.
Putting the water in a bucket for 24-48 will definately help, if you are concerened. I also saw a post there stating they could smell the cholrine, in actuality their cl content is prob low, weird property about cl is that not enough can smell like too much.,

I meant that I needed to water my plants before the chlorine evaporated. I didn't set it out soon enough, so I had thirsty plants and no unchlorinated water for them.

You're right about that. Chlorine smell usually means your free chlorine is low, you're smelling the chloramines.

Thanks for the input...I was not as concerned about it affecting the plants as I was the effect on organic nutrients & soil containing living micro-organisms.

Yes chlorine may not kill your ladies, but it will pretty much sterilize your soil...so I wouldnt suggest it
